• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Taller Gearing on SMS

Hi Everyone,

Just wondering if anyone's tried taller gearing on the SMS for less highway vibration. Did you go up in the front or down in the back? Is there enough clearance in front to go up 1 tooth? Ideally I'd like to drop below 5000rpm at 75 indicated, any way I can calculate what final drive ratio I need?

I probably ride a little differently compared to most of you. I use my bike as an occasional commuter and my commute has changed from <20 miles of mix city/highway to 45 miles of all highway. Highways around here average 75 - 80, at least if I don't want to hang out with the 18 wheelers in the right lane, and with stock gearing it's a bit buzzy.

I know this probably outside the scope of the SMS's design, but my original intent on getting the bike was to build an "F800GS-Lite" (both in terms of weight and on the pocket book), and the 630 still seems to be the best compromise in terms of its versatility. Now I'm just seeking that Goldilocks set up where things are "just right".

Thanks for your help

I like wheelies too much, but I know where you're coming from. I hit the highway on a regular basis too. I don't think you have much room for an extra tooth up front, it's pretty snug on the case protector as it is.

On my TE610, I went with a 41 tooth rear for highway duties. Now I'm spinning 4400 @ 70mph. I don't know if it helps, but with your shorter tires, a 41 might get you right where you want to be, but you will most likely have to trim the chain a bit. I ended up pulling off two links on mine...

See, the TE has a taller 5th and 6th gear, which I wish the SMS had... With factory 15/38 gearing, I'm just under 5K at 70mph...

When I first bought the bike, the thing was screaming at 6500-7000 at 65 mph... I had to do something about that before the engine self destructed... 45 minutes at 7000 rpm's can't be good for any engine...

Sounds like you bought a slightly modded bike. Factory on the TE was a 42 rear I think.

@RDTCU Yeah, i dunno why we have the shorter 5th and 6th for SMS. Makes me want to swap out my SM for a TE as an all arounder

I found a site to do the calcs (added the SM 630, but may take a few days to show up)

Looks like it takes a combination of a taller tire (150/70/17) and 3 teeth down on the rear (15/35) to achieve the results I'm seeking: 75mph RPM drops from 5469 to 4802. But his is going to have a major impact across all my other gears since I'm changing final drive, specifically it's gonna make 1-4 a lot taller than before. You lucky TE guys get 4780 at 75mph out of the box with stock gearing while our 1-4 gears are the same...

I did the research to convert the sms tranny to a te tranny you need part number 8000 7691 and part number 8000 79687. That will give you the secondary shaft 6th gear for a te and the primary 5th and 6th. The gears cost around 75 us. Dollars a piece from halls then a gasket kit and a weekend of fun and you will have the top end without sacraficing the other four gears. I will complete this mod around January and post pics.

My question is how can 5th be a different ratio if the secondary gear is identical between versions?

Looking forward to it!

I'm really looking forward to this post. I've been curious how much my mechanic would charge me to have this done.
