  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Stupid Question

I've never had a dirt bike with a battery before. When I hook it up to my 800mA battery tender, should I disconnect the battery from the bike, or just hook up the alligator clips and let it do its thing? Thanks.

Thanks. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to burn out the computer or anything.

Hmmmmmmmm I don't have a computer on mine, maybe wait for someone else to chime in

I know on all my 4 wheeled vehicles I've never had to disconnect the battery for charging or boosting.

on mine I use the Battery Tender with the plug in connector (no alligator clips, no taking the seat off). I leave it plugged in with the key off,( of course). I do not think you could ever back feed the computer(without having the key on).

It is intended to keep the battery connected to the vehicle. My batteries only come out during the winter. The tender makes those little batteries last a long time. Cam.

The external battery charger or battery minder produces a similar charge voltage as the charging system on the bike when it is running. It should not damage any of the electrics or electronics on the bike.

I have used a Battery Tender on a number of street bikes and dual sport bikes for well over a decade.
Preferred system is to wire the plug that comes with the Tender to each bike and plug it in very time the bike is parked in the garage.
Never had any issues with leaving the battery in and connected.
That said, I don't think I have ever started and ran the bike with the Tender connected...

Currently (get it?), I have Battery Tenders on the TE511, the V-Strom and my nephew's TTR-50.
My Scorpa and my son's CRF-50 don't have batteries.

I don't think it would hurt it if you started the bike while the tender was connected. Since it's connected in parallel, it wouldn't increase the voltage. It could provide more current, but the electrical system will only draw the current that it requires.
