  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

125-200cc Strange Noise, 04 cr125

Husqvarna
AA Class
Hey everybody,

Upon my last ride I noticed something strange with my bike. If it is in neutral with the clutch pulled in, it sounds normal. But if I release the clutch I can hear/feel a rattling/vibration (I know 2 strokes vibrate but this its way more pronounced). It is coming from around the clutch basket from what I can tell.

I've removed the clutch plates and inspected everything in that area, everything seems normal. I don't have the tools to remove my flywheel, but I noticed a bit of marring on the flywheel itself (don't know if that has anything to do with it).

I thought maybe it'd be bottom end related, However I checked the crank 10 hrs ago. Plus that wouldn't explain why its only noticeable with the clutch released.

Any Ideas? Im lost apart from pulling to motor out of the bike and looking for a problem.

Thanks.

Possibly one of the mainshaft BRG's as it spins when the clutch is released....its normal to hear a change of engine sound when the clutch is released in neutral...its called gear rattle

if its really loud then you got a problem...make sure your oil level is ok first

also your clutch basket is likely notched by now and might need to be replaced too...check the vertical "finger" areas where the clutch plates slot in...that edge takes a beating and eventually grooves out giving the clutch a pulsing feeling upon disengagement.....

its also possible the rivets holding the bottom of the basket to the primary gear are starting to loosen......which also makes noise

Clutch basket is slightly notched but nothing that would hinder engagement/disengagement.

I've owned the bike for most of its use (70 hrs - around 140 total). I haven't noticed it before. Changed oil every 8-10 hrs (I drained what looks to be roughly the 800cc I put in before), didn't measure it.

I think you guys are right seeing as the only thing that moves is the basket assembly.

So my next course of action will be to remove the basket and inspect the backside/primary gear. I'll see if I can feel any play in the mainshaft bearing also.

Thanks for the replies

Mainshaft bearing checks out ok.

Rivets on the back of the basket are ok.

Only thing I can see is the basket has a little bit of play, around (1/32") at the fingers. Theres a set of needle bearings between the basket and main shaft, theres no bluing to indicate lack of lubrication. It would seem odd to think that they would be shot, as I hear most people go through baskets/inner hubs.

I "may" take it to a local mechanic and get his opinion. Most mechanics don't impress me in the least bit.

Any other ideas, fire away

Edit: Maybe I'll try to get a video up to see if that helps narrow it down.

Every 125 I onwed (husky) did that slightly. Very slight noise under the circumstances you state. Maybe you just never wer concious of it before or maybe it is louder than normal indicating the aforementioned things to check
(a slight chattering sound is what all mine had from day 1)

I just went through the same thing with my 04, It turned out to
be one of the bearings on the main shaft had developed a rough
spot. I replaced all 5 bearings in the trans. while I had it apart.
You can get the bearings from a bearing supplier for about half
the price of purchasing from Husqvarna. If you need the bearing
numbers and the part number for a flywheel puller I can post
them for you. You will also need a clutch/flywheel holder, small
bearing puller and small snap ring pliers and a wrist pin puller if
you do the job yourself. The trans rattles on my 04 more than my
01's, I'm not sure if its due to a little more clearance on the gears
or possibly the cases are a little thinner, but it had developed a
vibration at idle while in neutral with the clutch engaged. Also
note you may have to hunt around for the center case gasket
because they are on back order.

I had the bolt on the crank main gear come loose after i rebuilt the motor.

I just retourqued and all is well.
