    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

stock wheels vs aftermarket wheels weight difference

does anyone know roughly what weight saving you'd make by changing rims and hubs from stock to one of the light weight aftermarket jobbies? done all the other weight reducing things but would still like to shift more.

One of the racers over on supermotojunkie did a comparison of his wheel sets when he built his Alpinas. This is what he came up with-

Stock Behr/KTM hub/spokes - 10 pounds 2 ounces --still need to add tube - 1 pound 5 ounces

Marchesini - tubeless - 8 pounds 11 ounces

Alpina Carbon Matrix rim/STS spokes/KTM hub - tubeless - 7 pounds 3 ounces



The Alpinas are stronger too, I've never seen any bent out of shape and I can't tell you how many tweaked Marchesinis I've seen...
 
Weight distribution along the radius of the wheel is also important. It would be interesting to see a comparison for that too.
 
Most aftermarket wheels weigh more. CNC hubs look nice and are strong but heavy. Most have bigger (heavy) spokes. Rims vary in weight. Going from a spoked wheel to the fancy cast / CF stuff can save a bunch but costs a bunch to.
 
thanks for your replies fellas. so sounds like the way to go would def be carbon fibre. combined with wavy discs (to save more weight) do you think the weight reduction would be worth the cost? i mean, i wonder what the effective increase in hp would be?
 
I would think it might be a noticeable differance. The reason I say that is, it's the 1st thing the motor meets that steals power and you through in the centrifugal force factor and it might really make a differance.
 
you're right. from what i've read on the net it sounds like money well spent, but it's a lot of money! will keep an eye out for some bargains and try and save up some disposable money in the meantime!
 
A mate showed me this website http://motard-supermoto-wheels.sportsontheweb.net/husqvarna-te610-te510-te450.htm which details how to adapt honda cbr wheels to the huskys, over here it is going to be a damn sight cheaper to get these cast wheels than custom ones made (they have cush hub too).

sure they may not be as light as some of the options out there, but they're a hell of a lot cheaper - i can pick up wheels (usually with tyres) for around $300-$500 aud
 
Interesting stuff mate. Those 5 spokes look dope. Mine's already got SM wheels though so doubt there'd be much weight saving with this option. I'd have to go carbon to achieve what I want to. Not to take anything away from this suggestion though. If you have a TE then this'd be a great option to have a set of SM wheels kicking about. Nice find.
 
just thought i'd share it, might inspire other people too.

I'm looking to get the 6 spokes for my TE, they'll pretty much make one bike into two.
 
Imagine saving 3+ lbs on each wheel! If I ever go carbon I will get the bike dyno'd again to compare figures. Plus take it to a weigh-bridge!
 
I really never thought of a Marchesni wheel being damaged. That was part of the reason I liked them. Because their cast, are they repairable? The carbon matrix Alpinas are really nice too! The conversion costs are scary to think about lol. I've been dreaming for so long though that when I do it, I'm getting exactly what I want lol.

Yes, I see racers bend them. They are forged and yes, repairable. But anywhere from $50 to $100+ per fix adds up. I've seen friends go through that, it sucks... Cost of Alpina Carbon Matrix (MSRP- $2800ish) and Marchesini Forged Aluminum (MSRP- $2700ish) is very close but generally they both sell for a few bucks less than MSRP. Though you will see retailers prices vary.. Some are very high, even above MSRP, and some are lower.

That conversion chart is for 610's. Anyone know if the 630 hubs are the same or different.
Weight should be pretty close, I believe the hubs are the same but there may be a difference in width of the rear hub.. (Rotor might be further in or out. That seems to be the part that Husky moved around on the wheels throughout the years of 4 strokes.)

With the tc449 would you go with a 5 or 5.5 rear? Sorry, I've lost a little touch with supermoto. I've heard there are better options with the 5.5, just not sure if it can clear it. I can't wait to build one. Did you see that The mamouth motorsports bikes are for sale? Wonder what all they did, haven't checked them out yet.

I think most of the guys on the 449's are running a 5" wide rear. A 5.5" was preferred on the older bikes, but I don't think it fits as easy as the new ones. If you can fit the 5.5 on your TC, you'll have a bigger contact patch for better traction. A lot of guys say they like the way a 5.5 leans over too.. I'm running a 5" now but I'd like to try a 5.5 if I ever have random coin laying around to build one.

Rieguy built a TC449 after he stunted out a TE511. He LOVES the TC for racing. Night/day difference he says. I'd like to build one as well, though I want a 6spd.. TXC may do the job if it has the same engine and throttlebody setup as the TC. Can't remember as it's been too long since I looked into em.
