  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

FE/FC Some Small Goodies For Mr. 501

Mr. 501 has been overheating in the hot summer weather when I ride really slow, tight single track, so I have ordered him some goodies. Today, a new radiator cap topped off the fresh coolant, and I also got a cute little blue oil cap (that topped off the oil change). I will be getting some items that I hope will help the bike to run a little cooler also. I bought a less restrictive end cap for the muffler, and a fuel tuner to keep things from being too lean.

So, yesterday was the first day I rode with the temp gauge installed. The day was not too warm, high 60s-low 70s up on the mountain. Looks like the fan likes to run around 200 degrees. On the highway, the bike runs 150-175. On slow dirt routes with inclines and rocks, the bike runs about 200-205. No boil overs occurred, so maybe the original cap just went bad....or the weather got cool enough that boil overs won't be happening anymore for this year.

What kind of end cap and tuner?

Have they arrived yet?

No. I should have probably ordered them from Taco Moto...because both units would be here by now, but I went to my local dealer for the shop discount, and they ordered the fuel controller from some supply that did not have them in stock, so now I am waiting for their shipment to come in. The end cap should be here sooner, but what good will that be, without the fuel unit. They are both late, as far as I am concerned...and this is a problem with local shops. They often don't seem to be able to provide the goods in a timely matter.

That’s a bummer. I know Pro Motos endcaps are a few weeks out. They don’t seem to be able to keep up with the demand. I ordered mine in 2017 and was 3 to 4 weeks out back then.

Yeah, I read some of the complaints on the Tech Talk page on FB. Looks like it's a problem all over with getting shipments for orders.

JD is around 2 months behind on everything, just like all of the rest of every supplier. It's not a "local bike shop problem" it's an industry-wide problem. Hell it's not even an industry problem, it's an outdoor recreation problem. FOr 4 months up here you couldn't get a canoe paddle.

From what I hear, that's really only a problem if you're going up S#!& creek.:)

Supplies of raw aluminum to machine items has been rough this year, and demand for goodies is through the roof. I think we will look back at this shitty year as one of the best for outdoor recreation in a decade.

I think we will look back at this as a sh!##y year for everything. They closed a lot of riding areas, public lakes, campgrounds and recreational areas earlier, and probably will again, before it's all over with.

Agreed. Our local riding and camping areas have been over-run and destroyed this past year. I skipped a bunch of riding in the mountains this year because I couldn't deal with the crowds and the hammered trails.

What a bummer.

I'm hoping the virus will be gotten under control in 2021 and all those people who have been out trampling the forests will forget they exist again and get back to their bar hopping, sports events attending, retail shopping, and whatever else they do and stay off the trails so they can be repaired.
