  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

SMR 511 upgrade advice

Hi guys!
I just bought an SMR511 a few months ago and had its first service.. so now looking to get some new mods on it!
I've read through the forum and done some searches so I just want to make sure I'm on track with mods...

So I've ordered a the akro full system and I've read here that with a full exhaust and a tuner its a whole different bike. The dealer I ordered the pipe through said they would tune it once its on and I understand there is an akro map, but is that any good? I was going to order either the JD tuner or a PCV. What's the difference?

JDHQX04 - Husqvarna TE449/511 (10-12) EFI? for the JD Jetting tuner?

A high flow oil filter? Does that make much of a difference?
Whats this I occasionally read about restrictions being removed from the inlet? Is that similar to the airbox mods?
Speaking of airbox mods. I read that you can put in a 2012 TC airbox part# 8000H7800 which opens up the breathing? Is this correct?

And if by some bizarre reason I wanted to add weight and put some pillion pegs on - where would I get some?
Oh, and finally - crash knobs. Bigknobs seem to be a goer - anyone used any? And does anyone know where I can get some exhaust protection too?

Thanks!

I'm currently running a PCV on my TE511. I've used the JD also. The JD is cheaper and will probably give the most significant power increase for
the money. I think an FI Tuner of some kind is a must when adding an aftermarket exhaust. The reason I'm now running a PCV instead of JD is
because of the flame out issue that has plagued me since day one. It's been not only frustrating as hell but could have gotten me injured or dead with
the impeccable timing of the flame outs. While the JD gave a nice gain in power I couldn't shake the stalls/flame outs. After reading some of the posts
from the very knowledgeable "Tinken" about the PCV's, I decided to suck it up and get one. Best $295 I've spent period. All my FI issues are gone. Dead
throttle issue, flameouts etc.. Bike runs so perfect and the power is strong, crisp, responsive and there...everywhere... I'm very pleased with my bike now.

You seem to have a lot of the same questions most new SMR 511 owner have, all of which is answered on this forum.

1. First make sure you have the "power up" plug, it is supposed to come NEW with one, but it seems lately a lot of people are being shorted the plug when they pick the bike up from the dealer. But with the power up plug, exhaust, and tuner the bike is very much more powerful and responsive.
This is a dyno my stock 2012 SMR 511 with and with out the power up plug. This plug also disables your stock narrow band 02 sensor.

2. The JD box seems very popular amongst husky owners. It is a fuel controller that is tuned by flashing lights and buttons on the actual device, because it has no computer interface it is priced cheaper. If you have the money i would highly recommend a Powercommander PCV with the add on auto tune module (you will need to get a 18mm bung welded to your head pipe) or the Bazzaz ZFI and AFM (auto tune, will need 18mm bung as well). I find that even with a decent tune on my bazzaz my bike still stalls out occasionaly. Im putting an AFM on my bike to hopefully solve this issue.

3. Here is a link of tinken explaining the difference, personally i will stick with HiFlo HF611 paper filters, they are really cheap and i am more comfortable with the paper. http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/ss-oil-filter-for-449-511-models-info.29096/#post-261425

4. The 2012 TC box lid has a large opening on the front about the (riders) left radiator, this lid flows a lot more air than the stock SMR lid, so a fuel controller will be needed to add fuel to the mix. http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/official-smr-511-mod-thread.20342/page-5#post-239790

5. Pillion pegs were supposed to come new with the 2012 SMR 511's, however i never got any. I dont plan to put somebody on the back of my husky, there is literally almost no where for them to sit. But if you do want to try it, you may have to buy them from the husky dealer. Heres a link to a parts book: http://www.halls-cycles.com/fckimages/file/Husky PDF/2012 Parts Fiche/TE449-511 07-09-2011.pdf

6. The proven favorite seems to be SME sliders, but they are no longer in business. I've heard BigKnobs seem to be where its at in UK, i wouldn't hesitate with them.

7. https://ssl.perfora.net/www.advance...nid=155116d06fae422/shopdata/index.shopscript They are in the states, not sure about UK sliders.

Also be cautious of over filling or under filling the oil, too much and you will be leaking oil out of your airbox from crank case blow by. Too little and you will be starving your torque converter. Keep an eye on this thread: http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/449-511-breather-hose-mod.25010/

Thanks for the advice! Really appreciate you putting it all together like that and taking the time to put the links up. Thats answered all my questions. I have the race map II running at the moment so I havent experienced the 8k rev limit - and by looking at your dyno results Im really glad I havent! Thats amazing! I guess they have it that way to meet emissions?

Thanks again!

Stainless steel oil filters typically will out flow paper filters 7 to 1. Oil flow is a big issue on the Kymco 449 engine, whether we are discussing the torque limiter or the crankshaft issues. Running 40 weight oil with a high flowing stainless steel oil filter is your best bet to keeping your 449 purring smoothly, especially at high rpm. The Kymco 449 engines do not hold much oil, so change it often. :)

Ok cool, thanks Tinken. I read your article on SS filters and I think Ill get a couple so I can have one cleaning and drying while the other is in the machine. What brand oil do you use?

I have actually two issues - maybe you can help... the first is that sometimes when I start the engine the dash resets and shows "451" (I think) which is annoying because it resets my trip meter (which I use to tell me how long until I have to get more fuel!) Does that happen to anyone else as well?

Also, I had my 1000km service and a part from the Husky dealer overfilling with oil (!) I discovered that there was far too much coolant in there - in fact, when I opened the radiator cap with the engine stone cold it literally exploded out everywhere and it stinks! It was all brown and smells like fish or something. I certainly didn't expect THAT right after its first service. So I changed it but I checked it again today and it smells again even though I flushed it thoroughly. Do you know what it could be?

Thanks

Run some radiator flushing product through it to get all the gunk/crap thats been in there then refill with decent coolant. Despite being able to put your hand on the engine/radiators and you thinking the bike's stone cold, if you've ridden the bike recently the system can still be pressurised so coolant will explode out when you take the cap off (been there, done that lol). To be sure leave the bike for a day without starting it to be sure, you can't overfill the system, it'll puke any excess out the overflow hose.

My dash only resets after it stalls/flames out and I try to restart it. With the cylinder in the wrong part of the cycle it draws too much current trying to start and resets the dash.
