• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Sm610 won't stay running

Husqvarna
I have an 08 sm610 with 6800 miles which is fuel injected.

I got cut off and the bike was dumped at about 20 mph.
The only damage was to the side engine cover which covers the stator.
I Replaced it.
Next time I tried to ride it started blowing the accessory fuse for the instrument cluster. Tracked down the battery trickle charger tender being the issue.

Replaced the fuse and the bike ran fine for a quick ride around the block.

Next day I went to turn it on and it had a very hard time starting. Turned on but idled very poorly.
Died and wouldn't turn back on. I waited a day and tried again. Bike started up and ran for 20 seconds then died. It keeps doing this every time even if I hold the throttle.

Took it too the dealer in santa cruz called moore and sons and he could not figure out the problem after 2 and a half months. He did seem to think it was some kind of issue with the fuel tank even though the fuel pump seems to be operating normally.

Anyone have any idea what the hell could be going on?

I'm thinking of just calling isurance and having them totally out the bike because there isn't anyone else to work on the bike in my area. The next closest place is in San Francisco and they just lost their husqvarna mechanic. This has been a complete nightmare as I have only put about 600 miles on the bike myself.

Jeez, 2.5 months and they couldn't fix? How much did they charge you and what did they say when you picked it up...Sorry about your luck?

Can you tell us what the dealer tried?

Do you know if they watched the fuel pressure as it starts/dies?
Does it throw codes?

.

I know this sounds dumb, but did they replace the battery or at least check it! How many miles over all on the bike?

If the bikes battery is only putting out 7.2 then it's the battery. If the 20mph dump made the fuel pump loose, there's your problem. If you don't figure it out, bring it to UP-tite in Santa Ana, he is still a Husky repair shop and will probably have it fixed fast.

How damaged was that stator cover? Is there any possibility that the stator or the pickup was damaged? Or maybe the wires leading from the stator? I noticed on one of my bikes that the coating on the wires split right where the wires went into the rubber grommet on the stator cover.

My Brother dumped his KTM not that long ago and had a similar fault (No Damage to his Stator cover)

Turned out to be the Coil pack that went (Degraded while bike was on), Might be worth borrowing one from another bike to rule that out.

Also as the other guys have said Battery and Fuel Pump would be a good starting point too

Sorry I haven't responded in so long. The battery is fine.

The dealer tested fuel and spark and couldn't seem to find any issue.
I can hear the fuel pump prime and smell the gas when it tries to start.
When the dealer tested it for spark and said it was working.
It does seem more like a spark issue to me.
The coil was replaced just about 300 miles ago but I was blowing the acc. fuse for a period of time.

The case was slightly punctured but the stator did not seem to have any visible damage and there was no metal fragments inside it.
It is possible that one of those wires might be damaged and not getting good continuity.
Normally it seems like a stator works or it doesn't but the wires are worth inspecting as I did have to replace the stator cover.
Now the bike seems to not want to even start and will backfire if I keep trying. Battery is dead and I am using a jumper pack to try to start it.

I didn't answer all the questions in the last post and I am not sure how to edit it.

This was Moore and Sons in Santa Cruz. (I live in the sc mountains)
Bike has about 6800 miles on it.
I don't know how he tried to test for fuel pressure but he seemed to think it might be something with the gas tank.
He kept waiting for another bike with a compatible gas tank to show up to test it. I know he tested spark and said that was good but im going to test it myself again.
I thought at one point he told me the coolant temp sensor threw a code but when I talked to him when I picked it up he said no codes were thrown.
He basically told me that he was stumped and didn't charge me anything. Gave me the devil be gone cross and wished me good luck. Told me to let insurance deal with it.

Santa ana is way too far away from me so motoxotica in Vacaville is the next closest dealer that is willing to take a stab at it.
Munroe motorsports in San Francisco told me not even to bother because they lost their husky tech. Gotta get a friend to help me because I don't own a truck yet and its a 2.5 hour drive one way.

Really hating how hard it is to find someone good to work on this bike. Its been down for 5 months and I am beginning to think it will never run again....

1. I'd make sure the insurance co is aware of the situation. Get some documentation from the dealer that they had the bike for 2+ months and couldn't fix it. Insurance needs to be clear that the bike hasn't run since the accident.

2. You have a lot of things going on here. Coil replaced recently (why?), fuses blowing, punctured side cover, suspect fuel tank (?), started for a while/now backfiring, coolant sensor, etc. Someone's going to have to start w/ the basics and have the ability to pull codes. The dealers response is odd to me. Either they didn't spend much time on it or they are really good guys if they had hours of a tech's time troubleshooting it and didn't charge anything. If the latter is true I don't how much we can help.

A few ideas...
-I wonder if you may have sheared a key on the crankshaft that may have affected timing? Bike might show spark and fuel but not at the right time. Happened to a 610 on the Forever West ride report.
-Could the TPS be way out of calibration (dealer should have caught that)?
-I agree, even if you damaged the stator the bike should start and run (w/ a full battery), just not charge.
-On our local Craigslist there's always a handful of guys advertising motorcycle repair. May want to call and "interview" a few with your bikes symptoms. Might find a really good, honest guy. Only thing that might worry me is their ability to pull codes.

Keep us updated...and good luck!

So the problem is now fixed with starting.

It turns out a wire that runs near the flywheel had gotten stuck in there and sheared apart.
The bike runs and starts up great now but its still blowing the accessory fuse.
It will start idle rev and I can use every accessory when a fresh fuse is in but the moment I start riding the fuse blows.
I think its some kind of bad splice or maybe the ground terminal on the battery is just too messed up.

Btw motoxotica in vacaville kicks ass. They fixed my bike 4 hours after I dropped it off.

I found that the accessory fuse is still blowing though.
Went through the expected things like unplugging the after market led tail lights and that didn't make a difference.
When I unplug the the tachometer though the fuse doesn't blow. I guess I need to look at the electronics behind the headlight but I haven't seen anything there yet thats a problem.

Anyone have any suggestions as to where common problem like this may be?
