• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

SM to TE conversion?

I've don't a couple quick searches on the topic here and elsewhere and nobody seems to have come up with a decent inexpensive solution yet. Essentially, I want to have a set of dirt size rims (21/18) that I can fit the SM brake rotor on to easily swap back and forth. I'd like to occasionally take a weekend trip out to some trails and have better size wheels for stability as well as the option to put some decent knobby rubber on.

Has anyone found a good solution for a 610 SM to offroad conversion? I have a set of MT60's on the 17's right now and they seem to do a decent job.. But there has to be better.

would you mind posting the image he has of his setup for sale here for me? I registered on that site but it wont display images still..

There is :)

This is a really inexpensive solution. $86 for the set, Cheng Shin 755's, 4.60 on the front and 5.10 on the rear. They worked great, but don't know how long they'll last. I spend a lot of time in the dirt on my SM610 and these are the best I've found. Yeah, they're still 17's, but you'd be surprised at what you can do on the stock set-up with decent rubber.

Great suggestion WoodsChick, I hadn't seen those tires before! What pressures did you run and what tubes did you use?

Also, did you mean 5.30-17 for the rear? Because I can't seem to find 5.10-17's

 Sorry about that! Yes, I meant 5.30. I ordered them from Motorcycle Superstore, no shipping or tax :) I always run the heaviest duty tubes I can find and I can't remember what pressure I ran. I'll have to check the log book...if I can find where Eric hid it. Here's the ride report I did when I first ran the 755's...

If you do a search of threads I've started you'll see that almost all of them are ride reports that involve dirt of some sort and my dirtymoto 610 :D It makes a great adventure/dualsport bike

Looks like quite an adventure! Nice pics too.

It seems like most places are sold out of the 5.30-17 tire.. I hope they didn't stop producing them.

Anyone know what other dirt tire sizes fit the supermoto rims? I wish those cheng shins were available but my guess is they were discontinued as every site that lists them doesn't have any in stock.

Dirt wheels

We sell lots of used frt wheel assy with brake caliper for this purpose. Then just pick any big 17 in. knobby for the back and keep tire pressure on the high side to protect the wide rim.You just swap front caliper and use original hose and master cylinder.Used frt wheel assy with caliper avg $450/500 max,if want new $900.I :thumbsup:have both in stk.billf

Shot ya an email, Bill. By the way thanks for the recent valve check, cam chain tightening, and fresh plug. It's running like a top!

I appreciate the offer but I'm looking for a spare set for occasional weekend dirt rides. Most of my riding will still be street :p

If you are in Oregon I would be willing to swap the whole shebang off my 09 TE610 for your SM setup.

:applause: List trade please.

17" Front with or W/O Rotor for 21" Front etc.
17" Rear With or W/O Rotor and gear for 18" Rear etc.

The 17" knobbies look cool, but I've wondered by no one has set up an SM for dirt by keeping the stock rear, and then lacing up a 19" front wheel. Our BMW has a 19" front wheel, and it's seems big enough and has many tires options. I actually had considered going this route with my SM610, but in the end I figured out that the 610 it a bit much for me offroad. I just installed a set of Distanzia's for the occasional dirt road and then bought a KLX250 for offroad.

For anyone watching, PALMER84ONE and I are working on a trade deal which somehow has to overcome the 900 miles distance between us.

If for some reason we dont get it done then I will put up a new post on the wheel swap offer.

I was hoping that Bill would find a new SM buyer who wanted to swap then I could just ride an hour to Salem and use Xymotics southern shop (AKA BMPs parking lot) to do the trade ... but now that the cat is out of the bag, what the heck. Maybe I need a trip to California now that it is almost August :cool:

I kept getting PM's from someone on another forum that did that very thing. He was convinced it was the way to go, since it worked well for him, and couldn't believe I was actually choosing to just throw a knob on the 17" and call it good. It is a good option, but I find that the 17" knob is plenty good for the easy dirt stuff I'm doing with the bike. Can't argue with the cost, either :) If it was my only bike I might consider it, but the SM is plenty versatile for me with the 17's on it.

Nah, people probably saw how cool they looked on my bike and went out and bought them all up for their supermotos  Tires Unlimited says a lot of the Cheng Shin tires are backordered so maybe it's just a problem at the manufacturing level or something? I doubt they would be discontinued. On the other hand, most shops are not going to actually stock a 17" knobby, so I don't know...:excuseme:

I've used a Metzleler Karoo and Continental TKC80 on the rear in a 150/70-17 but they are nowhere near as aggressive as the Cheng Shin 755, and they ran $146 and $157 each respectively. The Cheng Shin rear was $51 :)

Pirelli MT 21's are an option in 17" too, and fairly cheap (~$70) I had a set on my XL600R which is a 17/21 setup.

Yeah, I'm running a 120/90-17 on the front in the top photo. I don't think Pirelli makes an MT21 wide enough for the rear, though.
