• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Silly question but...

I spoke to the dealership several months ago. IIRC one belonged to an employee and one was on consignment. I got the impression both were purchased before the $2500 retail price drop, not that it matters to you. My guess is one of them could prob be bought for $6K. While that may not be much less than some gave for a new one you have to consider what what else $6K will buy. A new KLR...?

Most believe the 630 replacement will weigh a bit more.

Yea I am not anxious to add anymore weight, in fact if I can get one of these, I was planning on reducing weight by nixing the double exhaust.

Johngil had a F8 his TE replaced. He said exactly the same thing with first-hand experience. The little GS is a pig offroad. Obviously the TE isn't quite the same on road, and has to be modified quite a bit to haul gear, but it serves nicely as an adventure bike when properly setup. Mine will cruise 70-75 nicely on the hiway with a full load. It spanks the big bikes off.

You can't really compare an ADV bike to a dual sport. They both do dirt and pavement, but their focus is very different, which is why the bikes themselves are so different. That's why I have both. They fit different needs.

The 630 is a pig. It's more than 20lbs heavier than a 610. That's going the wrong direction. With modern technology and design, the bikes should be getting LIGHTER, not heavier.

The 650s that are planned weigh around 8lbs less than an F800GS. Yet they have less load capacity, nearly half the horsepower and less range.

That's why I'm looking hard at a R1200GS. :D

Most of that 20 lbs is in the dual exhausts with catalytic convertors. Change to a single exhaust and you drop 14lbs. Go to titanium single and you drop a couple pounds more so almost identical weight then.

The standard pipe on the 610 also weighs just shy of 10lbs. I went to a Barrett pipe which weighs half that making my 610 that much lighter again. Still a heavy bike all the same.

I think next time I will dualsport one of the enduro models such as the 510/511 or even a KTM500. I know there more mantainence intensive but the ride will be better for my needs. I will not even consider a 650 if its going to be heavier.

My '03 TE610e has dual exhaust and weighs 8lbs less than the 630. It's got a cush hub, too.

I have both a TE630 and a 1200GSA, they are the best of both worlds for me. The pig (gsa) goes on the big trips where I average a few hundred miles or more a day over the course of a week or two. I have taken it on some trails that I know real well and am familiar with, and have been surprised with the suspension performance. Not the best suspension, but when you consider the weight it is balancing including myself it does real well. Mostly though, it stays on double track / fire roads as well as asphalt. The 630 is my ride for romping in the hills and heading out to the desert. If you ride the GSA for a while, then jump on the 630 it will feel like your on a much smaller bike.

+1 I to haver a 1200GS and a 630. To me the 630 give me confidence to get myself into trouble with the 1200. :D I will say, you can pack the kitchen sink onto a 1200 without worrying about the subframe......
