  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Should my oil be steaming?

Wolf

Husqvarna
AA Class
11 TXC 250. After my son took my bike for a decent ride yesterday I decided to drain the oil again (Mobil 0-40). Man was it hot! Browninsh color, and steaming/smoking when I drained it. Not sure if I just never paid attention and its always this hot of if something is different....
I think I want to install some kind of a temp gage on the engine to monitor temps...don't they make these little adhesive temperatur strips?

Mine never has but I've never run it hard and then changed it immediately either. Is your coolant low? I'm assuming it's fresh since your rebuild. Does your fan come on?

My coolant seems to want to drop and settle j UST below the fins (Evans). This is new...did not do this with regular coolant. Now that I think of it my fan hasn't come on in a while...

That coolant could be a little low because the old stuff evaporated? Top it off and check again but the fan could be a big deal in the tight stuff. Better then blowing a gasket or the motor. Hopefully someone has tips for what to check on that though. Another thing to check would be the simple stuff like hoses or maybe even the impeller for the coolant.

That should be normal. That's why you have your crankcase vent going into your air boot. V8's will do that for a while if you have have one of the breather vents on a valve cover open. Even with all the oil drained while doing an oil change.

I use CV4 Quick Temp Strips. I have one on the top of my left radiator and another affixed to the right side of my cylinder. They work well and have survived multiple power washings (not that I tried to blast them off).

I have not had the trouble you described with Evan's Powersport Coolant but I went a bit overboard in making sure the OEM stuff was completely out. After draining the factory coolant I flushed my cooling system twice with Evan's hygroscopic Prep Fluid. I then added the Evans waterless coolant, ran bike for 30 minutes, drained coolant and refilled a second and final time with a fresh batch.

I've now been running Evans for over three months and my levels don't appear to have dropped a mm. As LandofMotards suggested, perhaps you had some water remaining that is slowly evaporating out? Still it seems odd your level didn't stabilized above the fins after topping it off the first few times.

At this point I think I'd deliberately overfill it and see where it settles. If the level still drops below the fins I would first check for signs of coolant leakage around the ends of every hose.

Evan's specs the boiling point of their coolant as being in excess of 375F so if you're boiling it off I would start by checking your impeller and if your bike has a thermostat confirm it is opening fully.

Thanks for the input. It is definitely coming out of the over flow tube. I will replace the sensor to see if that makes a difference with the fan....it seems the fan does not kick on as it used to....
