  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

125-200cc Shock differences? tc250 vs cr125

Hey guys,

I got a fubard shock on my cr125 if you have seen my other thread.

I am trying to save a bit of cash and pickup a later model sachs rear. I see very few cr125 shocks and they are all quite beat down looking (figure its 14 years old now) I was thinking of getting a 4 stroke model shock in the 05-09 era. They go for under 200$ and I figure newer is likely better.

Will it work with the spring off the cr125 swapped over? I figure sachs is sachs from 00+, but is the eye to eye length changing much?

In fact it would be nice if I could get a shock that lowered the bike an inch, and I could shove the forks up to match. This would help me touch the ground (thinking of doing more enduro type stuff and a foot down is a lifesaver at 5' 6" and 140lbs.

Well I made an ebay offer on a 04 tc250 shock.... 85.00$ shipped and is said to be working. God I hope it fits....

I don't know about shock compatability, but it would be super helpful if you could post some dimensions of your older style shock, like the mount ID and the eye-to-eye length, and the same for the newer shock when you get it.

A TC250 shock is going to be valved quite stiff for use on a 125 in the woods. FYI, it's very simple to lower a rear shock when it's apart for other work, so if you get it revalved have them lower it too. Cheap, easy, and completely reversible.

Yea I am hoping with the damping out it will workout okay. The stock shock was almost too soft and squishy with no adjustments working, it was scary to ride (literally).

I will post up info in this thread if the shock fits. I hope it does!

My experience has been that for offroad bikes 2000 and up the shocks pretty much share the same length and top and bottom mounting so you should be okay there. The '04 shock may have a bigger shaft which would be a plus.

The one thing that may be an issue is the length of the reservoir. The 125 has a shorter reservoir than some of the other bikes. If the '04 has the longer one it may interfere with the pipe. The good news is that you could probably use the reservoir from your old shock on the '04 shock.

If it doesn't fit and you don't want to mess with it, pm me and i'll take it off your hands.

Good luck!

Thanks man, I hadnt even realized the resevoir was shorter :(

I think I see it now, and remember my 510 had a huge res. The 125 sachs has the adjusters on top also not sure if that matters. I hope she works!

SHIT. Got the 250 shock in today.....it is 1" LONGER than the stock shock....

factory is 17" eye to eye the 250 is 18" eye to eye. What a bummer!!

Spring length is the same, but the newer shock is 2.5" diameter, vs the old is 2".....rough measurements with a ruler btw.

It appears the newer shocks are larger and beefier. Springs wont swap etc.

I will try my best to fit it in the bike, but am thinking it will rub/hit/not fit. So I may have to have the stock original shock rebuilt anyways.....

You cant just lower the preload as that will make your preload way soft and you will have a ton of negative travel (extending) and you will have a sloppy mess. A shop can make it work by lowering it as Tinken mentions.

Thats ok just take 1" of sag out of it.

Then you'll smash into the bottoming bumper 1 inch (or 3 inches of wheel travel) before a proper length shock. 9 inches of rear wheel travel might not be great.

Plus, the spring will go completely slack when you droop out, rattle around, and slam when you re-load it.

HuskyLove, just buy the right shock, or send the one you have to be repaired.
