  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Riding In The Snow And Front Spindle Shears

Husqvarna
A Class
I was out playing in the snow two weeks ago and rode over some fresh powder and the bike lunged down about a meter and stopped from 30mph to 0 mph bucking me off instantly! The crash seemed to be minor considering the speed but on closer inspection the wheel had entered a solid deep rut and twisted the forks and eventually making the spindle shear in half. We managed to make a make shift job to get it off the mountain but i was surprised it happened.

I've ordered new parts right away from the dealer but it took about a week to come from Italy to the UK.

So i fitted it tonight and had a head scratching moment;

Basically the old spindle is shorter and has an aluminum collar and the type that was delivered has a longer neck and works with out the collar.

My te450 is a 2008 model and my question is does anybody know if this part was revised at any point??

This is the new spindle installed

Not sure if the part was revised. My 08 and 09 are the same. I am wondering if the cold weather had anything to do with making the axle brittle. I appears to be a good fit with the new one on.

Yeah you could be right it was about -7c but the wheel twisted so much i'm glad it sheared rather than buckling the wheel. I also downloaded a manual and it appears the new revised spindle is the one they show without the collar???

Palmer84one do you have a collar on yours or is it like my revise one?

I'll be riding it tomorrow anyways as it seems like a good fit.

Mine (09TE450)does NOT have the collar that appears of the one on top... and looks like the one on the bottom. That one on the top looks strange enough to make me think somone cut it and used some of it (the handle part) and put it with other material... meaning it looks like someone fabricated the first axel from parts of an OEM one. looks like it was pressed onto a solid rod in the pic?
Those are some pretty rims? makes me wonder if you bought it used and if they did some engineering to fit the wheels or something...

or maybe its just me??

Glad you are ok (glad it happened in snow) and it looks simple enough to have fixed.

Holy smokes!!! I'm glad you turned out alright!!! BTW, my wife would kill me if I had something greasy on the washer/dryer..., unless thats your shop set??

Someone cobbled up the axle with that spacer or whatever it is. Most likely the reason it broke. Your forks could or should work better now with the right axle. You might want to make sure it slides in easily. If not you will need to slide one of your outer tubes up or down until it does.
Glad you got it figured out!

My 08 TE510 did not have that collar on it.

Good thing you didn't get hurt up on the mountain..

That spindle looks like a rear wheel spacer, definitely not stock for the front end. There has not been a change to the front axle system in a while.

Not a rear wheel spacer. But also not an oem part. Whatever it is/was it has been cobbled together after a previous incident for sure

Guys thanks for the feed back and the more i hear of it the more it sounds like a cobbled up get me home part that never got replaced. I'm so glad it launched me off in the snow rather than on the road on the way to the mountain or coal dips as that could of been very painful!! The good news is as you guys have mentioned it worked a treat and after a 100 mile round trip with a blast 91mph and seemed fine with no issues all day. Thanks for the feed back again guys same post on husky section on TT had half the replies cheers.

I agree, it could have happened at a worse place.

My 08 TE 450 also does not have that collar.

addo,
No collar on my 06TE250, 08TE450, 09TE450, or even the 08SM610. That collar just looks wrong, IDK... I am puzzled as to why that collar is on your bike.

UK '08 TE250 here, no collar on mine which looks like the twin of your replacement.

Glad you got some time to play in the snow, I went out and bought a new tyre especially for the snow and we had a grand total of seven small flakes!

Cheers
-Simon

Cheers for the feedback guys it works a treat.

Snow traction was awesome on the Mitas O2, I'm very happy with it as i have to ride 20 mile of tarmac.
