• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1982 Husqvarna WR430 - $2200 (Bridgetown)

00A0A_dZ0yPl6ooL8_600x450.jpg

Bike has been set up for vintage racing, upgrades include:
Lectron 40mm carb
Bored out one time
Forks and front disk brake from 1983 WR430
Cartridge Inserts in forks
Recluse Clutch
Vector Speedometer

the bike has a later clutch cover with the removable clutch cover part so may have a later clutch etc in it . do rekluse support a newer model that is interchangable with the bikes of that era ?

if i found one cheap enough id actually put one in the 82 cr500 purely so i could never stall it . its a bit of a pig with the 4 speed . and im not down with the big bore 500 "2nd" gear start . its got enough balls to just roll it on and drag most stuff off anyway

anyone got any insight into which one would be compatiable . given that all clutches are about the same size these days there must be some cross over that has a matching od and number of drive lugs etc

thoughts ?

It is within the realm of possibility. If you look close enough it is likely a 1978 390WR as it has the ML frame, but then I could get a 430 engine into an ML frame with just a little fab work

Most likely he had an EFM auto clutch made up for it, by the looks of the removable clutch inspection cover with a spacer. He probably worded the ad as Rekluse to indicate an auto clutch and not a true Husky Auto.

This is something I have wanted to do for a while now. I think it would work great.

Given the similarities between these Husky's and the early Husabergs, it wouldn't surprise me at all if a Husaberg Rekluse would fit. I have a '95 Husaberg FE501 with a Rekluse in it and love it. A 500 might be a bit much though. The Rekluse guys never recommended the Z start for the Husaberg 650's and, even in the 501, I've swapped all of the steel balls out for tungsten in order to get the clutch to grab to my liking.

A Rekluse or any other modern auto clutch is not legal for AHRMA competition. That does not matter for someone who doesnt race AHRMA, but it might be important for some. Also, he says its an '82 and its clearly a '78 ML frame, and he says the forks are from an '83 WR but discs didnt come out until '85, so I would not take the Rekluse claim very seriously unless I saw a picture of it.

our vmx is pretty much run what you brung .
people run methanol in the low key races .
one guy had a rd350 engine in a 77 78 rm frame . that was cools to race against . i was on a bsa lightening 650 .

The only thing 82 on this is the tank and plastics , 390 was not available in 82. Looks like a cool bike tho. Maybe owner will chime in and we can get more info ?

I might do something similar with one of my extra 1978 ML frames. I like the looks and the stance of it very much. The owner does not know the year of the frame or what front end is on it so he is not very Husqvarna savvy

I hear you Brian on the "spirit" of vintage racing but does it say an auto clutch is prohibited? Specifically?

Older gas long shocks no nitrogen bottles, 390 pipe too small for a 430 ill bet it's a 420? 83 seat angle gaps on the rear, older round rear frame loop older '77 frame. It's a frankinsteinhusqvarna

you can see its a primary kick motor, with a 430 jug 9 fins/older reeds. frankenstein for sure. probably a good bike tho.

Exactly. Its obviously not a 390/420 since its a primary kick engine. The 390/420/430 cylinders are almost identical, the stroke is 3mm different but there is no reason a 390 pipe would not work in that particular combination.
