Pro Class
It was a little rougher weekend than anticipated…but everyone is on the move to the next round.
And I believe in reporting the ride... good or bad...
We went a day early to check out the local attraction; Mammoth Caves…
If you haven't been to them and are in the area…good stuff. Plus it was 55 degrees underground and 83 above!
Went out to the track early Saturday and talked to the Husky guys and walked to get a favor for the track…lots of rock… but all good, no mud holes.
Got the line early and picked a spot, ended up with 19 riders in the '4 stroke B lites' class. There was a new addition to the usual cast of characters…a hot rod out of the 250 B class looks to have jumped ship. He was not going to beat the current points leader in that class and I think he'll be hard to beat in this class.
Anyway we were here for the 'Get Started Again' ride and were going to stick to the game plan. Get it going and put a full ride in at a decent pace, was not expecting to set the world on fire.
Andy got off the line good and was 4th heading into the woods. At the first rock up hill he got a little hung up and dropped a few spots. First trip thru scoring he was in ninth. He was moving along pretty good but started having bike issues…
Get this…his tank swelled up like a puffer fish…he thought it was going to split. It ended up swelling out so much that the ends of the radiator shrouds were pointing straight out and getting his knees! During the 2nd lap he had to make stops and keep letting the pressure out of the cap. Then he pulled into the pits to have me look things over... 2nd lap - extra time stopping, 3rd lap - extra time in the pits. Lap Time Killers....
Conclusion: The heat of the day, the heat of the motor and the black tank were causing expansion of the gas and air in the tank. The little 'check ball' valve; (that's supposed to stop spillage in tip-overs) in the cap was plugging the vent hole and not letting pressure out. Am I the only one that did not know you were supposed to remove this ball?? If you pull the bladder out of the cap you can remove the check ball cover and get the ball out…Me; I jammed a screwdriver thru and pushed the ball out. Didn't know the little cap came off.
So his last lap was a little better than the previous ones…
After the race I got confirmation from Joey; the FAR mechanic; 'ya, you're supposed to pull the ball, a little gas may leak out the vent hose but…' What else don't I know??
Anyway, he survived and got 9th in his class out of 19… Got a ways to go… just looking to keep improving. Going to be tough to make anything good out of the year end stuff, just looking forward to celebrating the small things along the way.
Moving on to the Indy round.
It certainly was exciting watching the XC2 unfold…Congrats all at FAR!
