  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

I know it is a known issue with racers. Not wanting to start a pissing match just want to get a feel for who on this forum experienced it and when. Keep it nice. Thanks.

- If you posted you did have failures please post what type of riding and how many miles.

Both 449 and 511....511 raced offroad 2 seasons with oil change between every race....no problems with either one
Add Zip-Ty vent to the 511 after 1st year, increased oil to 1150.

While we did some racing, I would classify our use as moderate and low hours (neither bike did more than 30 hours while I had them and we were racing 50 Expert in 90-120 minute GPs and XCs mostly). Little sustained high rpm riding and also little muddy hillclimbing type stuff.

How (apart from a total breakdown or metal in an oil change) would you know if you had an issue?

Starts slipping then blows up.

I have seen a picture from Tinken with a box full of them. I know it is a known issue. I think the ZipTy oil kit is a great idea and probably eliminates a ton of these from ever happening. I just wanted a feel for those who have had this issue and the specifics. Mainly for my own info and concerns of possible future failures and trying to avoid them as i love this bike and wish to keep it long run. Heck it has already outstayed most bikes around here.

The only way we can test is take it out and put it on our fixture. We then use a torque wrench to measure the clutch pressure in Ftlbs. I took mine out and measured 242ftlbs. @150ftlbs, we replace the limiter. If you feel any clutch slip at all, try to have a TL on hand.

What will we see for symptoms? sounds? Feeling like the clutch is slipping? Any clue before it lets go?

If you notice it, it will feel like the clutch is slipping. Customers have complained about it in the turns and under hard acceleration. Seems to effect the SMR riders more.

Makes sense....dirt provides slippage/torque reduction that pavement doesnt....maybe if they didnt have CTS helping them stay hooked up then the torque limiter would live longer !!

No problems with mine (2011 TE511). I ride mine in the woods and occasionally play on an mx track. It rarely sees highway use, but I have raced several hare scrambles with it.

2011 SMR449 2000km cruisey road use/high speeds, 1000kms hard SM racing.

This really makes me cringe when I think about how hard I push my bike on the Tar.
Race starts the other day I felt like my clutch was slipping but it could have been me modulating?
I haven't noticed it on the gas out of corners yet. I'm hoping a slipper clutch will further reduce stress on the TL.

If it's any consolation, I have designed a new torque limiter which will not fail and transmits horsepower with the efficiency of zero loss. Currently prohibitively expensive, but if bikes start exploding, I will green light manufacturing.

Thanks for the info and video. No issues so far on 6600 miles on my standard SMR511.
I presume the off throttle whine on the video is not related and is just due to straight cut gear on the clutch (mine does this)

Well I think it is time. I believe my TL is slipping. 6000 hard miles. Bike makes about 2x the power it did new so expected. Not a big deal. replace and ride. Just reporting.
