  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

250-500cc Plated my 360 today

I have a 1986 400 WR that is plated. now I just blend in with all the other DUAL SPORT bikes on the road.

nice!
damn difficult to plate (and keep the plate!) anything other than a legit dual sport, that left the factory as a dual sport, here in Oregon... still thinking of trying with me WXC250...

in New York if the MSO doesn't state OFF ROAD USE ONLY you can register it as road legal. getting an inspection sticker is a different story. No turn signals and no brake light = no sticker. I work at a dealership so its not a problem for me. no turn signals on mine but I do Have a ft.brake light switch and an Acerbis fold away mirror.

Arkansas allows a bonded title and no inspections presently. Dhallilama, wonder if you could plate the bike in another state, get your title and then approach your DMV? I used a rear hydraulic brake light switch(eBay) to activate the brake light and tied two strips of LED lights (Walmart) underneath the Husky tail light lens. Between this sand the brake light / tail light license plate holder underneath the fender I ended up with quite a bit of light back there. Still not happy with the mirror mount, additional material on the way so that I can incorporate bark busters and mirror mounts. It's great to be able to scoot down the road. I'm looking for ideas on tires; what do you fellows use for dual sporting?

I've got a '87 430 WR on the way and plan to plate that one as well. We'll see which bike ends up being more suitable for my needs.

shhhh! that's the secret method of plating here... get it plated in another state, then later register/title/plate here. the problem isn't in getting the shiny new oregon plate... the problem seems to be getting a letter from the state telling you to surrender your plate. i've seen it happen a year or two later. older bikes have better luck.

rear i use a Pirelli MT43 trials tire. DOT legal (much stiffer than a competition trials tire), great traction off road, really smooth on road. it's not a tire that's great if you like roosting around turns, better if you like keeping traction. i run them as low as 5psi off road: grips wet roots and rocks like velcro. much better in the mud and mucky stuff than you'd imagine. good in the desert, but kinds sucks in silty sand. great on-road manners. i use these on the rear of all my dirtbikes.

front i've been trying different tires lately. my old go-to pirelli desert tire kinda sucks on the road for any real distance.

the 87 has my all time favorite seat ever, with way broad power from that 430. some are a bit vibey tho. its all in crank balance.

I run knobby tires and I dont really dual sport it. just trail to trail basically. the plate just allows me to fly under the radar if the distance between the trails is substantial. I wouldn't ride it to the Dairy Queen or around town as we all know knobbys suck on pavement. LOL

I've got to replace my front for sure. Plenty of tread but hard as a brick. I'm heading more in the dual sporting direction with a tank bag for carrying oil and my phone. I've a speedometer app and a charging outlet for the phone. I'll post additional pics as I get it sorted. A group of friends is planning a trip out west later this year and I need to be all up legal.

I've run the MT43 on the rear of many bikes over the years... tons of street miles, mixed on/off, woods, desert, rocky terrain. it's a good 'un.
lots and lots of reviews over on advrider

seems that most fronts I've used have been a compromise in one way or another for on/off road. some are great off road and... meh, kinda suck on the street... which is way better than the opposite.

I put a bunch of street miles on Pirelli Scorpion XCMS... it was awesome off road... on road isn't the most confidence inspiring.

I'm running an IRC knobby now which is good so far, but only 100 or so street miles on it to date.

yup, 4.00 x 18 is it.

traction really comes in when it's aired down, 'specially in the mucky or rocky stuff. air it back up for highway and it feels great there.
