• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Oil out of airbox.....but this time there's another symptom.....

FasYankee

Husqvarna
AA Class
ok, I've read the couple of threads about over filling the oil in the crankcase (definately not the problem, I'm wicked anal about measuring capacities.....experience has taught me about blown case seals), and I've read the threads about over-oiling the filter.....this could be the initial problem, as I didn't know about the "wring-after-you-apply" step, and just yesterday re-oiled the filter.....so with that history, here's what happened (bike is an SMS630 with about 2k on the clock btw):

Went on a benefit ride today with a bunch of my friends today, I definately ride like a hooligan, wheelies whenever I can get away with it, back it in when I get the opportunity, launching off whatever obstacle presents itself........the ride is great, decide that I have to get home and split off solo, taking the interstate. I'm cruising along, tach is reading 6000-7000, somewhere around 75-85 mph then POOF....no power.....and the sound from the airbox gets rediculously loud.....it'll go if I chop the throttle off-on, but won't really hold a steady speed, just drops off, kind of like I'm running out of gas. Now all types of things are running through my head, I take a quick look on each side of the engine, and behind me to see if I'm dumping oil....nope, then I think that maybe my filter element got sucked in or something. So anyway, I limp it home, the idle is super low, so at stops I have to blip the throttle to keep it running, it's missing too, just sounds like it's in a horrible state of tune, and the intake noise is rediculous.

Upon inspection, there is oil dripping from the airbox, not as bad as some that I've seen, but it's on the brake res. hose, top of the case cover and the exhaust guard. Now I have to confess, there was some oil there on my last ride, I took the cover off, cleaned out all the oil......re-oiled the filter....and then buttoned everything back up.

Now, I look on here, read the posts, and figure that I'll check the crankcase vent tube (coming from the valve cover and terminating in the airbox), well upon inspection, via taking a Q-Tip and swabbing the inside of that tube at the airbox...it's bone dry....so the oil cannot be coming from overfill blowing from the crankcase. The oil looks and feels very much like motor oil, it's not sticky (there is sticky oil there, but what's at the bottom of the airbox is just like motor oil.) I took the airbox off the boot, and there's oil inside that boot that connects to the TB, between the screen and the TB.

Is there something I'm missing? I'm going the route of over oiling the filter, but I've never had a problem like this with any of my dirtbikes my whole life. I can't come up with an explanation for the increased intake noise, seriously, I had expected to get off the bike and see the entire cover off....it was THAT loud.

The bike is as follows:

Power up (resistor/lambada delete)
De-catted stock exhaust
Airbox maze/snorkle delete, holes drilled.
JD Tuner

Everything else is stock, save for the mirrors and deleting pass. pegs, grabrails.....

I wholly expected to get some oil out of the vent tube, but when I say it was dry......completely dry......

Other than this little hiccup, since I've done the power-up mods, this has been my favorite bike in all of my 36 yrs of riding.......I hope it's not serious.......

yep, checked that too.......the one thing that I'm hoping is that the power up plug thingy for the o2 sensor delete, I made that from a post on here, just a resistor jumping the wires.....I did it the best I could with crimp on blade connectors, so as to be plugged into the stock receptacle, and then shrink wrapped and taped the heck out of it. That would explain the idle, but not the loud intake roar. I also just pulled the plug and it was as black as night......so that could be an issue as well. Hopefully can get a replacement tomorrow morning on my way home from work (12-8 shift sucks). So tomorrow I'll pull the tank and look at that resistor, I already wrung the crap out of the filter, and then since the tank is off I'll probably check the valves, and then change the oil afterwards. The only other thing I can think of is that the JD tuner is mounted on the velcro that they give you, just aft of the battery, and it jiggles slightly......wondering if the settings got bumped under the seat? (can't check unless the engine is running....) I dunno, just thinking out loud.....

I doubt screwing up the jd box settings would have such a dramatic effect.

Is your jumper resistor a DIY job? Maybe pull that and check it with a multimeter.

Yeah, the resistor is a diy, and that's what im thinking is the culprit. I work nights so I had to make the kids dinner, and get a nap in, so I may take a look at that tomorrow......keeping my fingers crossed.......

Well the resistor was reading 2150ohms, which is close to spec. The spark plug was jet black with soot, no shiny bits......all I had time for today, maybe ill get a chance to drain oil tomorrow and check the valves.......what would the intake valve issues be? I haven't checked them yet, and the bike gas been running perfect, not like this was progressive, it was all of a sudden. Like something just "went".

If you can, do a compression check or leak down before you take anything apart or drain the oil. I'd want to rule out mechanical issues first, especially when it happened suddenly.

.

Pffft.....you know what.....bike is going to the dealer......it's under warranty.......I don't have time for this who-ha....

Will do, thanks for the insight......not that I don't enjoy doing my own work, but I just started a new career, have 4 kids (one on the way)......and on top of it all, im working the midnight shift.......barely have time for riding!

I feel your pain!

Ok, initial impression from the dealer (owner is one of the mechanics) is that the auto-decompression spring went south, leaving the valve open. Ill know more early next week. Other possibilities we discussed were the diy resistor, a bad cpu (if its the case I get a TE one) a bad JD tuner, and finally something mechanical. I'm wondering if the cam chain could have skipped and sent the intake timing off? Again, just theorizing, as now it wont start at all and makes weird huffing sounds as it turns over.....

Update: just spoke with the dealer, first step as authorized by the husky rep is to replace the wiring harness. I guess that there is no"official" recall on the harness, but there's been a history of problems with them. The automatic first step with any warranty job is to first rule out the harness. So the harness will be here next Thursday, swapped out on Friday. I get the feeling that ill be missing this riding season with the SMS on a week-by-week basis, same thing happened back in 98 with my 94 FZR 1K, ended up trading that in for a CBR900RR, missed the whole season. At least I have my WR Sumo to tide me over...........

Speaking of the wiring harness, part of it runs right between the exhaust headers. When I changed my exhaust, I found some melted insulation. I wrapped the wiring with some heat shield cloth.

Just called the dealer for an update.....just as id expected, going to be without the husky for the season it seems. There are a bunch at the dealer with the same symptoms. Husky has only authorized the replacement of the harness, which was done on one bike with no difference. Now wait till Thursday for new "instructions" from husky.........I hate warranty service. I know its not the dealers fault, the factory just strings us along with "approved repairs"........

I'd ask if they've done a leak down/comp chk. If not, why not? Shouldn't take 15-20 min to do. Your symptoms don't point at an electrical problem.

Ok, so yesterday I called husky n/a, got a return call back today and spoke with the dealer-corporate rep, sort of a liasion between dealer and corporate. Well he gives me a different story from what the the dealer told me on some accounts, and the same story on others. Bike has been there almost a month now, weather around here is usually the best you can get about now........the rep said that its their priority to get my bike back........I know that's p/r bullsh*t, but at least he called me back......time will tell. I want to be on the dealerships side on the issue, but if I find out that it been a string-along, then ill report back, and switch dealers for future business......
