  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

oil filter application question

towpro

Husqvarna
B Class
My new to me 2008 TE 250 came with some spare oil filters.
Hiflo hf 154. I assume the last owner used at least one. I put one in and rode it around 1/2 mile in the yard.

Now I see it really takes a hf 563. Search showed me at least one other person using the 154 in his 08.
Research (K&N site) shows the 154 is 1mm longer, both have a relief valve but no indication on the PSI.

Anybody know if this causes damage?

I hope this is my last stupid question.

It's a bit of a confusing story with the filters. When we first got the 08's, the 154's were the only thing available to mortals. In 2009-10 the 563's started being mentioned in forum posts and finally made available. I only used 154's in my 510 from 08-10 with no negative results after 2000 miles, including valve clearances. I did not ride the bike hard. This is my personal experience with the filters.

My 09TE450 came with a 563 in it but the 563 was not available yet in the US till about 6 months into owning the bike so I ran the 154 for awhile- yes we all ran the 154 at some point (not 1 or 2 people).

Basically, the only difference is the oil bypass valve uses a different pressure. The 563 is better matched to the circuit the bypass spring is stronger. So the 563 bypass will hold back more oil pressure than the 154. If the 154 is longer- the 563s seal probably makes up that difference. The seals are also different. In the end- the differences are small enough that you should not worry about running a 154 if you have some spares. But when you purchase new ones- get the 563. The 2 times that the bypass valves is supposed to come in to play are when the oil is cold and you rev the motor and the oil cannot flow through the filter fast enough it goes through the bypass rather than destroy the filter... the other time would be if the filter were dirty enough to be clogged and restricts flow. Goes back to emphasizing NOT revving a cold bike... and regular maintenance.

So Run the 154 and seek the 153 upon your next purchase.
