• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

New to me 610 with starting weirdness

Hi everyone!

I have recently picked up a 2007 SM610 with 8500kms on it and it has been a blast to ride. However it does have a few weird things going on, most of which I am taking care of weekend by weekend. But I am coming up stumped with starting the thing...

Starting the bike cold, with neither the choke nor the hot start pulled out, no throttle, the bike will maybe start and if it does, sputter and die. Fair enough.

Same thing, but with the choke pulled out, it starts, and will happily idle for about 45 seconds, then start losing revs, then sputter and die. I can keep it alive tickling the throttle until its warm, but think that's not quite the way it's supposed to work.

Using the hot start has a similar effect. The bike starts nicely when its hot, warm even, but cold it seems like it can't be bothered unless I rouse it with the throttle for a couple minutes (the needy baggage...)

Anyway, my first guesses are idle speed set too low, carb's durrrrty, or jetting is "messed up". Won't know for sure without openning things up, but it may or may not have been rejetted for the K&N filter and LV exhaust that are on it.

Any tips or suggestions as to what to look for? I'm a little worried that these may be symptoms of a bigger problem and while mechanically inclined, I haven't spent much time inside a carb.
