  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

New to Husky and pissed anyone want to change my mind before I trash this piece

OK... This is going to be long so sorry but I bought my 2011 Husky TE511 new from a shop in Southern California, I was going to get a KTM but after doing some shopping around I was introduced to the Husky. I did my research and found nothing but great reviews, and the new technology that they had introduced to their bikes this that year. So I made the mistake and bought a 10,000$ dirt bike. The 4th day I Freeway I was engulfed in smoke and was covered in oil. Come to find there was a bolt on the side of the motor that is for Timing Chain maintenance that had come out and oil was shooting out under pressure. After 3 weeks and many headaches I got my bike back. Then a couple weeks later I took it out off road for the first time. Mind you this is after I went to Pismo Beach without my new bike because it was in the shop for 3 weeks! OK so I ride mostly in Glamis Sand Dunes and my last bike which luckily is still in the family is a 2006 Yamaha WR450 with some work done to it, California restriction removed, throttle and carb work. The stock Husky couldn’t even touch it. So I tried racing my buddies stock 2006 Honda 450, and I would have him if the bike didn’t govern out at 70mph! And on hill climbs I can’t even get out of 4th gear without bogging down. Granted the only thing the bike can do is look great, but that don’t mean crap to me. So does anyone have any ideas to change my mind and get this bike to live up to its name?

I fully restricted 50 state legal DS bike is going to get killed buy a purpose build MX bike like a CRF450. If you uncork or replace the muffler and add a JD EFI tuner and gear it down you will be in the ballpark. As for a bolt backing out, shit happens to any bike. Why was it down for 3 weeks for a missing bolt? I have a bunch of really fun miles on mine, love it.

Ya, I think we need more details about what you have/haven't done to the bike since you got it. Is it de-restricted? Is there a throttle stop on it? How many miles/hours on it? Stock gearing?

Comparing to a CRF450R isn't exactly fair. That thing will unabashedly rip your arms off and was never setup to please any environmental authority. The downside of getting a bike that is setup to be register-able in your ridiculous state is that you have to put a little effort in to undo those CARB-pleasing modifications.

People on this forum are very friendly and will help with your issues. Don't give up on it so easily!

It sounds like the bike is all fixed after the oiling incident and you're just bummed about performance?

The bike is shipped in a CARB compliant mode. That allows it to be street legal, but it's really lean and performance is highly restricted. To get the performance back, you need to do what is called the "power up."

You put it in race mode, probably remove the O2 sensor and maybe the throttle stop as well. Plus open up the restricted air cleaner. That's about all there is to it on my 310. i know your bike is different, but I suspect the steps are similar if not the same.

Based on what I've heard from 511 owners, you really want to drop a JD tuner on it. It will transform that bike into a raging hell beast. Ok, maybe I'm dramatizing it a bit, but that's how I roll. :) The tuner is about $210 and worth every penny.

Personally, I don't like uncorking exhausts because I like my hearing and I don't want to attract attention. But I think you can get some great performance without doing that and even more if you do open up the pipe.

This is pretty much how my TXC511 rolls, one gear down on the countershaft made 6th usable on occasion. JD fattened up the power and got rid of lean surges/flameout issues. I use the stock Akro (TXCs are different in this respect) which is plenty quiet. I used to ride Honda 450s, now I eat them for lunch !!! Husky has better suspension, better powerband, better handling and on a gravel road drag race it will run with anything.. Hondas included. Best part is after 90 minutes of racing Im not beat to death; that arm yanking powerband on a CRF has big downsides.

If I were you, I would put your bike up on a stand and tear it apart. Grease every thing on it . Rumor has if they don't grease every thing, Gramps they can save 10 pounds:lol: Check ALL Fasteners. JD Tuner is a good investment. I prefer it to Mikuni EFI software. Do something Illegal and Immoral and get your bike uncorked! Then you can get a real world test of your bikes potential. I lost a top end on my TXC 250. MY FAULT for not checking all fasteners.

My SMR511 has positively boatloads of bottom end and midrange torque. But then mine doesn't have a California compliant oily rag shoved up its wahoo. :)

In all seriousness though, sorry husky hasn't worked out for you. Of course this forum is going to be partial but there is a bike for everything and everyone. I hope this all works out for yOu. It's a lot of money lost. The good news is that this forum is filled with people that have a lot to add unlike myself lol.

Any bike can have problems, unfortunately emission bullcrap is what we have to put up with to have a street legal bike. My bike is now running pretty well and is way faster than my old 600. All the performance issues can be overcome with the help of this forum. My TE 449 was my first new bike in a long time I payed way less than an orange bike and I ride something that is different. Keep the Husky.

I still want to know how you ended up paying $10,000 for a bike with an MSRP of $8,999 and then let the dealer have it for 3 week's to fix it. That sounds like one hell of a dealership, did you not even attempt to make a deal? All your problems can be alleviated with aftermarket parts and by completing the power up but why bother your to unhappy to sell it to one of us for cheap.

The power up kit everyone is talking about is basically a plug that allow's you to change the EFI map to race map 1. Huge difference for me when I did my TE310

After reading your post it is clear you should get rid of this bike,
the husky is a hands on bike, sounds like you should stick with your Yamaha.
This is for sure not a good place to come and trash a Husky

Well if you do come back to see what you started...grab a cold beer, a new bottle of locktite, your favorite wrenches, and get to it. They all seem to shed hardware faster than a California politician can spend your tax dollars on crap when new. Finally got smart after coming home on 3 out of four first rides with a bolt missing.

Then, just make sure you get the thing broken in and on RACE MAP II. You should have received a plug with a small loop of wire with your bike.

While you've got the seat off, there's a plug located near the the ECU (computer module) where you can plug in the jumper. Search for threads here on Cafe Husky if you need to.

I know that the motor does need some run time on it before it will make it's best power. But once it you break it in, and perhaps do some mods, the engine is far less of an attention whore than a Katoom.

If you still hate it, then you can probably find a local buyer here on CH. Maybe it's not too late to plate that WR?

Mate, I think you've come bitchin and cryin to the wrong crowd here:banghead:. And then to compare your bike to a couple of mx and enduro bikes which are modified is just...well nuts!

Maybe your thread should have started like - "I've just bought a Husky 511 and was wondering what can I do to get the best out of it??". Yeah I bought myself a Husky TE310 after years of lusting over the brand and was to say the least was dissapointed in the performance but I spent time reading the threads on here bought a couple of things made a couple of mods and far out I've got the sweetest lil' Italian ride, I love it. Best bike I've had - honest.

You poor buggers in California with all your emissons crap, but remember there are plenty of manufacturers, both bike and car, who produce vehicles that are way below their potentail all in the sake to meet regulations or to give the best fuel economy so they can sell them.

Get over yourself mate, listen to the advice, do it and enjoy your ride - lifes to short.

If the 511 is anything performance wise like my TE510 was in de-restricted mode you will eat those 450's easily along with the KTM 530. I even trashed a KTM 690 one day but wasn't sure if it was stock or worked.

What rear tire are you running for Glamis and number of paddles?
