  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

I just picked up this awsome 09 husky yesterday, and there are a few questions hopefully you guys can help me with!

1) I think the bike has that so called, "power up" kit. Its got the dual husky exhaust, not sure if thats stock or not, and its also got a little gold cap where apparently the O2 sensor used to be. Does anybody have any links where I can check out what is all involved with the power up kit? So I kinda get a feel to whats been done to the bike from stock, modifications wise.

2) I am having a stalling issue where, if i am revving it pretty good, then just drop off the throttle to 0%, it can't catch itself and stalls. Not all the times, but sometimes, like stopping at a stop sign. Is this because it no longer has the O2 sensor?

3) I was given a box of parts with the bike, some black canister, and the passenger pegs. They said the black canister was some e-vap system, which burnt the excess fuel? Would adding this back on give me any more mileage? I was told it would, but reduce my power. I'd like to add it back on, bad idea?

The power up kit should consist of a free flowing exhaust, a plug for the exhaust where the O2 sensor originally was and a resistor that plugs into the wiring harness where the O2 sensor was.
I'm not 100% familiar with what the '09 kit consist of so you're factory dual exhaust may be retained during the power up. Sometimes after a PU is installed they need a bit of tweaking (adjusting the values)to get the full benefit. The evap. canister wont help with mileage or performance and really doesn't even do very much when it comes to capturing fugitive emissions. You might as well leave it off. If there is a dealer in you're area that has the software they can hook it up and adjust the values but before you do that you might wait until it is fully broken in. They tend to run better once the loosen up a bit.
 
Yeah you should be good by then. If you're already over that mark then you may want to take it to a dealer that has the software to make some minor adjustments. Also you might want to read through the Power Commander thread here. There may some things things in there that you can use.

Alright thanks, Im in mid 700s now so I'll try to wait until 1k and then head over (1 hour to my closest dealer :P)
 
Enjoy the new ride! I have enough trouble with the Sheriff while riding to the trails on my TE, I'm sure they'd have me in jail in short order if I had an SMR. !!! That machine is the ultimate urban assault vehicle (UAV).

Don't wait to get the TPS and FB1 values checked/set using iBeat at a dealer. It can make a significant difference in the ride-ability. Check to make sure the air filter has a skinny little cage supporting it, not a nearly closed off cone.
 
For the 2009 SMR, the power-up stuff comes with it and consists of the following: Less restrictive air filter cage, O2 sensor shorting plug, O2 sensor bung plug, and you also remove the throttle stop that limits it to 1/4 turn on the throttle. Also people take off the charcoal canister for fuel vapors. There is no change to the exhaust on the '09 SMR, which comes with dual exhaust. For more info, see the husky forum on SMJ.

It shouldn't stall. Does it do it when hard braking and the gas level is low? If so, the fuel pump has slipped. Do a search for tons of info on that subject.
 
The box of parts shuold also contain the catalytic converter if it doesn't it may still be in the bike and that could definitely cause stalling.

The SMR twin exhaust doesn't have the removable cat like the TE so there won't be one in the box!

We run a 510 demo bike and have left the O2 sensor in rather than fitting the power up resistor. Bike runs great - I think maybe the way the SMR is ridden (large throttle openings, not much slow speed running) reduces the need for the power up kit and this gives you the benefit of the closed loop efi with better gas mileage.
