  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

I am a new 2013 Husky TE511 owner. I have had many dirt bikes and a couple street bikes. They were all Japanese bikes. This is my first Euro bike. I sold a DRZ 400 to get the Husky. I was riding more dirt than street so I needed something more suited for dirt. In all honesty I am not brand loyal. I purchased the Husky based on the current sale. I did some online research too before purchasing the bike. I believe based on how I have been riding the DRz that the 511 should be perfect. The most I hope to have to ride the 511 on the road may be around 20 miles on some state highways and county roads. This would be to get back and forth to the trails. It should be ok for that. I plan on putting an FmF pipe on the bike and have the dealer set it up. I hope to pick up the bike next week. I am excited about getting it. I just wanted to introduce myself and say I think this site is a wealth of information and I look forward to participating.

Welcome aboard! One thing to remember with these engines is that they take a long time to really break in. You can throw all kinds of money at it with aftermarket tuners, etc. but it literally takes a good 500+ miles to see what it can really do. Get yourself a few oil filters as well as you will want to change the oil often and consider a good synthetic oil. Check the ZipTy section for tips and tricks, and Motosportz has some nice bling goodies too!

Enjoy your new ride, I think you will see and feel a noticable difference from your DRZ.

What he said, be aware, the FMF is pretty loud even with the Quiet Core insert. I failed a 96 db check for an organized dual sport ride. You could de-cat the stocker and put the money towards tires, tuner, seat, etc... Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the replies! I was hoping that the Husky will be a noticeable upgrade from the DRZ. As far as the pipe goes, from what I could find that seemed to be the most popular pipe. I am getting the slip on with the Q4 insert. I definitely don't want something that is too loud. Should I change to a different one? I really don't like the way the stock pipe looks.

Congrats and welcome. Do the map 3 upgrade thru Zip Ty Racing when you get around to it. It's well worth it. I've owned a DRZ. BIG difference! Suzuk felt like a lead taboggan compaired to my TE.

I don't know what else is readily available, but the FMF with the insert is about 98 - 100 db, which is a bit loud. I'd seriously think about modifying the stock can, and watching for a quieter slip on. Are you in an emissions state?

I agree the OEM muffler looks odd but then again the entire bike is a bit unique looking. The stock pipe is a baffle style so no repacking needed. Might consider decatting the stock pipe if noise is an issue for you. Welcome aboard.:)

I am in New Jersey. We do not have any MV inspection for motorcycles so I do not need to be concerned about that. I just don't want to so loud as to be offensive. Again, thanks for all the replies.

I'm in NJ also. I have the FMF and don't have a problem at all when I'm riding on the street . Definitely send the ECU to Zipty and have it reflashed..

I appreciate that attitude.

I am so thankful that folks here were honest about the sound level of the FMF even with the restrictive insert. I don't want to get all preachy, but 98 dB is simply too loud. It's not good for anyone and certainly not good for our image.

Sound is our biggest enemy. I wish the industry would shift to < 94 across the board. Start at SX and MX with 94 and drop a dB every year until we are at 89. Make it cool to be quiet.

Preach off. It's a free country...I get that. However, my wife is both an ear doctor and a tree hippy...so I get a mass dose of STHU... I LOVE (and she likes) the sound of the stock 449/511. It is even quieter than my old Honda 250X (which was uber quiet too). when I pass hikers, MTB rider, or equestrian folks and am silent after just 100 feet - that goes a LONG way.

The dealer called today and said the pipe is in and is being installed. I can pick the bike up on Friday. I asked the parts guy about the sound level. He said that most everybody buys the powercore pipe and puts the Q4 insert in which makes it reasonable for the street. He said the pipe is loud without the insert.

As said Huskys are slow to wear in which I believe to be a good thing. Run it in with a mix of soft and medium revs for the first 100kms. Change the oil and oil filter then go ride her like you stole her (not quite). I know this will evoke some contrary commen,t just make your own mind up and welcome to the fold. You will love the bike, esp. after a DRZ which are solid and bullet proof but heavy and ponderous

Haha I had a DRZ as well. Sort of a right of passage for some of us, eh?
After owning one and then swapping out with a friend who owns one, I rode it both in dual sport mode and supermoto mode and I was like "where did the suspension and/or power go?" Especially offroad. It felt like a total "beginner's bike" to me. Slow, low, and tobogganing over the whoops and bumps. My friend was not happy after riding my TE haha. "I shouldnt have done that".

Yea, the DRZ is a great bike, I really like it, it just that I am doing a lot more off road riding. When I bought it I figured I would spend more time on the road. I even raced it in two enduros. Needless to say I think I pushed it to it's limits. I am really looking forward to the upgrade.

Going from a drz400 to a TE511 will be quite contrasting. You may have to break In the 511 for a bit and desmog it to get it running good since the plated enduros are restricted to make the epa testing. The 511 may be tiring to hang on to in the tight stuff.imho

You'll have to be on the clutch a bit more in the tight stuff. You'll get used to it. Have fun!

I still have an 09 DRZ400S, and I like it for what it is, the 2012 TE511 is a real dirt bike with a plate.
The DRZ is better on the road, probably more reliable, but not even close in the dirt/performance.
