• Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

    Thanks for your patience and support!

New Beemer in the family...

I know, I know, this is a Husky forum, but I'm still excited about my husband's new BMW X-Country.

Just over a year ago we got a matching pair of Honda CRF230L's. I got the bug to start doing some motorcycle camping trips. My husband was reluctant, since he doesn't like tent camping much, but he went along anyway. We ended up doing three trips last summer and had a great time.

So we started talking about doing some long-distance traveling, but of course the 230's weren't going to cut it. We considered getting two BMW X-Country's, but I was kind of stuck on getting a Husky. I ended up getting a SM610 in August.

So we went from this:

To this:

Then in November I rode to Death Valley on the 610, while my husband followed with the truck and camping trailer:

Well he was really bummed that he didn't get to ride too, yet there was no way he was going to ride that distance on his 230 (even though my dad managed it on a TW200).

Well next I started making plans to ride to Oregon with my dad. My dad would ride his big cruiser. Well my husband really wanted to go to, and started talking about the X-Country again. He bought it just days before Christmas.

So now we're much more evenly matched with me on my 610 and him on his 650. Since the BMW was my second choice bike, I could hardly wait to ride it. Well I was totally impressed. That bike is sooooo nice! It rides like an absolute dream. I am a bit jealous, but of course I love my Husky too. The Husky seems to have a little more throttle response. When I crack open the throttle, it feels like the bike wants to wheelie. If only I knew how to ride one! The beemer feels a bit more mellow, yet still has a lot of power and rides buttery smooth.

So anyway, thanks if you bothered to read all of this! I'm pretty excited, so I had to share. Hopefully I'll have some good ride reports in 2010!

Very nice! I read your last ride report with your dad. Have you sent your 610 to Uptite yet? My 610 just hit 800 miles so I took it George last Saturday, he can do magic with the the programing and mapping he also has a pipe that will take off some weight and a lot of heat from the cat in leg area.

You lucky skunk :mad:

How I envy you that your significant other is into motorcycles (even though his choice of machinery is a bit bizarre…:D)
My wife is totally not into it, not even as a passenger :(
I guess all I can do is read yours and Woodschicks ride reports and daydream…

:thumbsup:

So jckid, do you have a garage full of bikes now?

Well congrats to you and your husband. You know what they say; a family that rides together has lots of FUN. Enjoy

Well I can totally relate. My husband originally had no interest in motorcycles, since one of his best friends was killed on one years ago. In comparison, I started riding in my dad's homeade sidecar at the age of 2. He got me my first bike at age 6. At age 15, he put me on a 750 cruiser (and I've disliked cruisers ever since!). The only way I could get my husband to ride was to get small dirt bikes. I got an XR100 and he got a DRZ125L. I got bored pretty quick, but it was better than nothing. It took a lot of this :banghead: to talk him into moving up to the 230's, and I really wanted a TE250. I never thought he'd ever go for something like the BMW, but our camping trips proved we needed more power and comfort. He seems to enjoy riding now, and wants to ride to Oregon this summer, yet I don't know if he'd continue riding without me.

At first I wasn't even considering it, since it has plenty of power for me. But after riding the BMW, I realize that the Husky could run better. It's obvious that it's running lean. I would also love to lose some weight off the bike, so I'm starting to think about it.

I am adding some stuff to the 610 right now to get it ready for traveling. I just added a case saver, Fastway footpegs, and HDB handguards. My seat should be back from Renazco next week. I have Avon Distanzias ready for spring, a windscreen on order, and I'm looking at a skidplate.

So jckid, do you have a garage full of bikes now?

Garage full with vehicles, shed full with 230's, 2 mountain bikes, and 2 road bicycles, and patio has become temporary Husky & BMW storage! Know anyone looking for a 230? We are going to sell them. I'd like a KTM105 for off-road duty, but we'll see...:eek:

Well my wife isn't into riding but I have a daughter that has been riding since she could walk. NO racing, but loves to ride with her dad.[ME!]. She also has a 230 & whips most of her past boyfriends on bigger machines.[ha]. I did say past. Seems to hurt their ego!

Good on both of you having a joint pastime interest. With those machines the world is your Oyster. It was good that you sarted out modestly and grew into it rather than with one big whoosh. I wish you both all the best of riding together. Its now time to get the Old Fella's bike updated. At his age a nice Yammy WR 250R might be a consideration to replace the 200.

God Jc;
I love it when you talk dirty…
:busted:

My wife told my yesterday about a dream she had; we had matching bikes and matching outfits (<--wtf:naughty:) and something about a truck and having to ride in the rain…usually she’s losing me halfway into it talking about dreams (or in general…:p)

So I triad the psychological angle by telling her about this thread (“there’s this woman on our board and she’s got the same bike as I do and…” :devil:)
So my wife, not to be showed off says; you can get me one of those big scooters like you see at the bike rally’s…

Well I can just picture it now;
Me on the dark 610sm
She on a white scooter with pink Hibiscus flowers on it…

With matching outfits…:lol::bonk::lol::bonk::lol:

:thumbsup:

Hey, whatever it takes, Muddy! If that's what she wants, then that's what you should get her. You never know what it might turn into:thumbsup: And I'm totally with you on the matching outfits. It's always a race to see who can put on their favorite jersey first so that the other one has to change into something else:lol: We have lots of the same t-shirts from enduros we've done or whatever, and we usually end up arguing about which one has to change to a different shirt before we go out in public.

Congrats on the new bike, jc :applause: It's neat to see the progress you and your husband are making in regards to the bikes and the kinds of rides you are doing together. I think it's pretty cool. It's a great thing to do together, too. All of my best memories involve my husband and our bikes:)

Speaking of matching outfits...scroll back up and you'll see that we match. Now I feel rather goofy! :lol: Well actually they're just slightly different. Mine has pink accents (stitching and graphics) and his has red. One day he couldn't figure out why he was having a hard time getting his pants on. Well the reason they felt small was because they were mine! He looked real cute in pink though. :lol:

:lol: That's too funny! Well, it couldn't be too bad if none of us noticed:)

I don't really mind all that much when we wear the same pants or jersey, but Eric has an identical twin and his mother never put them in matching clothes when growing up. He's been pretty thankful for that as he has a thing about it. I just think it makes us look like boyfriend and girlfriend. There are worse things in life :D

Reminds me of a few years ago when ladies MX gear was just starting to become really popular. Fox had come out with a powder blue outfit and I had to have it. I went to a race that year and saw about 12 other gals ranging in age from 8 years old on up wearing the identical thing.:doh:

From then on, I went back to regular guys stuff. The colors and patterns that I like are not what most guys buy anyway, so I get to be more of an individual.:D

My wife loves being a passenger, but would never ride her own. My daughter is all about bikes she's been riding since she was 6, racing since she was 12. In 2006 she won the girls NETRA harescramble championship, in 2008 she won the womens harescramble championship, this season she got a 4th place in the guys division C4strk she might have placed higher if dad had replaced titanium valves in her 04 TE 250! Now she is on a WR 125 racing in the 200 class. She also has her street bike lisense her first bike was an 86 VFR 750, this season she will be on a mint 85 Suzuki GS 700ES. She is 17 now.
My younger daughter tried riding wasn't her thing she is my other permanent passenger her thing is school so i cant complain at all i guess.
