    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Need help with my 450. Leaking coolant into head

Hey guys,

First post here but hoping i can get the bike going and it wont be my last.

Bought an SMR450 which wasnt running (lesson learnt) knowing that it had head issues. I bought it thinking it was a gasket and planned on just replacing myself.

I bought a new top end gasket kit and started replacing. As i removed the head i found that the head base gasket was both incorrect for the bike and upside down...

A few months went by and i decided to get a shop to finish it off. So i took it to my local husky expert and had them put the whole thing together (there was more work than just the motor). After putting the top end together they got it pressure tested and found that it was still leaking so they suspected the gasket was damaged. After i told it was brand new they said the best option might be to take the head to a machinest. Machinest took a tiny bit off it and said it was now perfectly flat.

Put it back together and it started up and ran for about 5min and died. They then couldn't get it going so they put a camera through the head and found coolant in the barrel once again...Hes now stumped for ideas and suggest the best thing would be to get a new motor. Im obviously trying to avoid this as i've already spent much more than anticipated. Other option is to get a new head and barrel.

Has anyone experience something like this? Any tips or ideas?

Im located in Sydney Australia if anyone has a cheap motor laying about.

Appreciate any help.

I would pull the head and cylinder, and check both on a piece of glass, I wouldn't trash the motor until a few more inspections were done. There is only 1 place where coolant can get into the combustion chamber and that's where the head and cylinder come together.

There could be a crack in the head that's allowing coolant in when the motor is warmed up, or as olderhuskyrider says something isn't flat. Probably the barrel as you already had the head skimmed.

Do you think i should get the head and barrel xrayed or just take a gamble and try a new barrel and hope its not a crack in the head?
 
You can get crack detection spray from probably a welding supplier. Usually a two part process by spraying on a dye then some kind of developer that draws the dye out from any cracks present. Surface has to be really clean though and oil/grease free.
Check both head and barrel to make sure they are flat first, this is the more likely culprit.
