  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Need help ID'ing metal found in motor 07 TC250

Hey guys, while I dig through parts diagrams I'm wondering if anyone recognizes what this little piece of metal is (?) Just found it stuck to my drain plug (magnetic) and hope it's not serious. I've got a race this weekend.

It looks like a gold colored bolt head of some sort yet it's smooth on both sides with an inset allen pattern. 4 or 5mm maybe, I will confirm. the head is ~11mm across.

The bike has always ran great, very little shavings on the screens, like specs only, and these two chunks were the only things I found. Thankfully it looks like they stuck directly to the drain plug and stayed there. Rode the bike two days in a row last weekend or so. No issues.

Anyone recognize this part?

thanks for the response. not sure why the pics aren't showing, i'll try to attach one instead of link.

the odd thing is it's smooth on both sides, with a curve to the surface. one side is more angled. doesn't appear to be a bolt head (but i'm not positive).

trying another pic..

are the backsides of those retainer bolts recessed? maybe what i labeled 'front' above is a recessed back?

hmmm. lame time for this mystery :D gotta hit the road for the track tomorrow.

ah, hah! nice work, Pinit  now the question is... which bearing. so it seems this little bolt worked it's way loose then got sheared by some gear teeth.

do you think it's safe to run it? i'm trolling through the shop manual now to see where these are used.

They are used in all the bearings. Prolly a dozen in there. Its your call to run it. Some retainers only have one screw some have two like the one I posted. If that plate starts bouncing around your gonna have real issues. But tough not to race on a big weekend either.

hmm... OK, well thanks for the help, really appreciate it! you're quick

yeah, big event this Sat i dont want to miss. man, tough call. think i'll just pray there is another bolt holding the plate down. i saw no other metal in the oil or screens, no funny noises, etc. but i know that could mean absolutely nothing. grrrr

Here are some pics from my 08 TXC250 ... There are a few gold looking items in my machine ... Along with the mains retainers, there are 2 other retainers where that gold looking, hex head both is used is this pic .. Not sure what what the other two places shown here on the upper left side of the cases are holding ...100_6014.JPG

This shows what shafts are running off those 2 bearings on the upper left..

awesome pics, ray_ray, thank you! i'm studying them now...

it looks like quite a few of these gold hex heads hold a single plate, that bums me out. so curious why i didnt see any other shavings though. it was literally like the head sheared and got shot right to the base of the motor.

quick update... the bike ran mint all day yesterday, flawless through ~20 laps of Southwick sand. just dropped the oil and found one fleck on the magnet and dirty oil.

catastrophe averted! now to tear her down.

Those items on the left with the retainers are the kick starter and estart I thinkked ... Deadly still but not alot of action there as compared to the mains ....

(I'm gonna run a couple days with a cam cap retainer bolt ~somewhat stripped till I get the helicoil stuff... I'll be pulling the value cover somewhat quickly after my 1st ride to see if the bolt is trying to back out .... I'm not too afraid of the cap coming off ... just the bolt wiggling back out )

you know, i'm starting to think it may be related to the kick starter... i've been having some massive kick backs and 'notchy' feel now and then. wonder if this bolt is part of that bearing/retainer set (?)

btw, the Husky got me a holeshot this weekend! (#22)
