  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

This bike freakin rips... So far I have added a rekluse auto clutch, Scotts dampener kit with the 25mm risers and had the suspension done by Pro pilot.... oh added some rad gaurds and a skid plate too.. I am totally awed by how well the bike is in the tight crap... And the open stuff its crazy fast!! Fuel for me and my riding style I'm good at about 55 miles maybe 60! Looking forward to next Sunday's 100 mile fun ride!

How do you like that rekluse? I've been considering one myself. Give all the pros and cons you see with it. Have you done any jetting or carb work?

Hey Redbone, I love the Rekluse!! SOOO worth the money in you ride any tight stuff!! All I did with the jetting is changed out the stock factory main jet from 460 to a 430.. still working out some minor bugs with the jetting.. bike sometimes wants to not start right away when hot without wicken the throttle a little to let some air in.. other than that the bike runs clean and strong...

It *feels* to me like it's rich at idle. for idaho spring (2500-5000', 30-70 degrees) i went to clip #2 on the needle, 450 main and 32.5 pilot (just dropped the pilot to 30 yesterday, but haven't tested it in real dirt). it started just fine at home with that setup. the needle may be a tad rich still too. it does need to clear out a bit as it warms up, but both the clearing out and the rich starting may just be mikuni symptoms, since it doesn't have the 'air striker' features that i think are supposed to help low throttle-opening situations.

Motosapiens, Have you anything new to report on your 300? More thoughts or impressions on the bike so far?

i just really like it, lol. unfortunately injury to my fiancee cut my race short over the weekend, or i would have some bonafide race results to compare with previous years. i'm planning on racing the wr at the next national h&h and at the idaho city isde qualifier.

Dirtlord, I"d LOVE to try out your Husky 300. I ride an 08 KTM 300xc (great bike) but I'm a big fellow and she is a little cramped for me. I've sat on a Husky and it just fits me, so yeah I'm itch'in to actually ride one. What's your riding schedule like? I also live in Hollister,er well actually Tres Pinos. I can be reached at 408-846-8540 thats my work number. Thanks for the offer. John

Hey StrokerJr:

Stroker- I Just sent you a PM.

My 09 WR300 is definitely broken in now. I finished the District36 Sawmill enduro last Sunday with several deep river crossings, rocks, ruts, hill climbs, logs crossings, bottle-neck, and tight technical test sections. Did I mentioned snotty mud!

If you are a fast rider, you'll love this bike plus it's very stable, sure footed, and feel very planted with exceptional power to drag my tire butt uphill. I ran out of water at mile 52, and I was pulling muscles that didn't even know I had due to my lack of hydration.

Here're some stuffs that I don't like about my WR300. Keep in mind, this is my 3rd Husky, the other bikes currently in my stable are KTM, and Yamaha. My husky brothers will probably flame me on this...

#1 The rear suspension (slow and high speed compression) is way too harsh for the stuff I ride. On the other hand, the faster you can go the smoother it gets if you can hold on.

#2 I'm 5'11" and occasionally I find my self in an awkward position usually on a technical narrow trail with very little footing on the left side, this make starting the WR a challenging task since I have to lean my body forward to kick the bike but I need my left foot on the ground to assist because the kick starter is located about an inch or so forward than a typical bike. This usually not a big deal most of the time.

#3 I'm positive that your KTM is a bit leaner weight wise. Ten pounds may not be much but during a 6 hours plus event, I need all the advantage I can possibly get.

#4 The stock 2.5 gallon tank is cutting close for me if you're on the pipe and hoping to make to next gas stop with out hitting reserve. A stock 3 gallon tank would be sweet.

After my gas stop I didn't realize that gas was flowing and leaking out of my gas cap. For some strange reason, the stock OEM cap needs to be twisted with a bit more force to ensure a complete seal. I only have this problem with Huskies.

#5 I agreed with other folks that WR300 is very roomy on top, but personally I find the foot pegs is a bit too high up for my taste. I do have Fastways footpegs, I'm going to try to 'low boy' position for more leg room.

#6 I want an e-starter - see my #2 complaint.

#7 The sub-frame bolt assembly holding the side number panals sucks! Although I used anti-seize, the internal bolt assembly still spins preventing the 8mm bolt from coming out. Again, I only experience this issue with Huskies.

Lastly, if Husky make a lighter 300 with or with out an e-start will I buy another? Hell, yeah!!

I found the suspension good for fast trailriding, but for racing/aggressive riding (esp in sand) the forks would blow through the strok on big hits. The cure was to get them revalved. I sent my stuff to LTR and it's much improved.

The starting is awkward enough that my husky is not my first choice for marking course (where i have to start the bike 100 times over the course of the day), but for racing/riding doesn't seem to be an issue. Stock jetting is kinda rich and the stock carb is kinda wonky when starting hot, but I think I'm getting it down.

<snip>
#4 The stock 2.5 gallon tank is cutting close for me if you're on the pipe and hoping to make to next gas stop with out hitting reserve. A stock 3 gallon tank would be sweet.

My float height was set too high, so the carb would overflow if i put it on the kickstand. I can easily go 50 miles at race conditions w/o hitting reserve. I don't know how much further.

After my gas stop I didn't realize that gas was flowing and leaking out of my gas cap. For some strange reason, the stock OEM cap needs to be twisted with a bit more force to ensure a complete seal. I only have this problem with Huskies.

my cap leaked at first. The little rubber grommet in the cap wasn't quite centered right and got kinda caught up in the threads. it hasn't leaked since I fixed that.

Adding my .02 to your observations, for another view....

I got 70 miles out of my 09' with the stock pipe and Mikuni carb. This was tight trail riding with minimal WOT excursions.

I've also done 60 or so miles (from camp 25 to the ice caves and back) down at EFR, which as you know is a lot of WOT riding.

Haven't had a chance to do a long ride since the PC pipe and PWK though, so not sure what she'll do now.

Saturday i have made 140km (+-85 miles) on the stock tank on my WR300 2010. Small technical trail + a couple of twisty gravel road @ 50 mph approx. I have hit the reserve at 130 km.
