  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Muffler repack already????

So...I repacked the muffler with the pricey Moose racing repack kit (steel wool, fiberglass kit etc) over the winter and just about to confirm that it's burnt up..I've put less than 10 hours on it...I know the manual states repack after every competition but wow....figured it would last longer...Think I'll go for the loose pack kit this time as it's cheaper and easier to jam in. Is this normal for the Moose racing repack kit to blow so quickly?? I did just have two back to back days riding single track in some warm (relatively speaking) conditions..Oh well...remove, inspect, replace....maintenance :)

Isn't the Stainless stuff supposed to last for a really long time? Have you tried the eBay stainless rolls?

I use scouring pads made of thick copper wire, and just loop the doughnuts around the core....

I have done this on every bike I have owned, along with muffler sealant on the end caps/around the rivets.

I have never had to re-pack. Never noticed a performance difference but it does seem more loud/flat exhaust note. Alot more dead thump instead of the tinny sound.

Hmmm...here's the interesting thing...there was LOTS of packing left...not like the time I orginally replaced it. More info...it was near the end of long ride and i started to feel some hesitating and some backfiring that generally tells me to flick it to reserve. Bailed on the guys and headed back to parking lot. The bike starts and idles high with choke on and once I let it warm up and push choke back in....rpm's drop a tad and stalls out. Before I let it stall out, I cracked the throttle a few times and DEFINITELY sounded loud as though it was burnt out packing. I'm going to repack it with the steel wool approach, remove the entire exhaust and properly RTV all the couplings...could I be missing something here?

chore boy?

Hmmm think I'll stick to the good ole Fiberglass repack kit as i ride single track in some controlled forest areas...don't want to be one of those guys that leaves any chance of a spark on the trail...thanks for the feedback

Fiberglass burns off. Stainless doesn't. I don't know about copper. But I would think that stainless + a spark arrestor would be the go to if you concerned with fire. It's very much the same down here where I ride. Fire is extremely problematic.

Hey Ripn,

You bike didn't sound loud to me on Saturday, just real close to my back wheel

HAHAHAHA Yeah, Thanks for the rip...was a real treat to be in a group ride with a TE 449 and 250. The muffler went awry the next day at Limerick forest during the Bytown gathering....luckily it was at the end. A good ride with Chris, Bill, Eric, and Tim. Looking forward to connecting for a Ganny rip soon!!!

You haven't had the air inlet rubber slide up have you, leaking air??? Stalling, back-firing....

the copper stuff doesnt burn...its thick and actually its copper coated stainless but it does not burn or melt....i have tried :)

I would think it packed loosely would quiet it down some..

SO.....had been wracking my brain trying to figure out the strange idle thing that seemed to go hand in hand with the muffler pack blowout......so silly almost don't want to share....I had to pull the "red knob" during my last trail ride to start when hot....I guess I forgot to close it and shortly after that's when I noticed odd throttle response/idle(explains the increase in decel popping and high idle). Man.......silly......oh well, lesson learned hehehe

Oh yes, and for all of us OCD kinda guys also important to note that a good RTV around the manifold and all exhaust couplings has had a SIGNIFICANT decrease in decel popping...the season is BACK ON!!!

What's the lesson? You left the choke on? Did that burn the packing?

Cosmokenney,

Lesson learned was to troubleshoot basics. The likelihood of burning up packing with a lean running motor (probably ran 10 km with red knob pulled) is probably low but...regardless...fresh packing and proper RTV'ing all the coupling has definitely improved the seal in the exaust system. Now....to put more hours in a weekend to balance out the "to do" list with the "want to do" a.k.a more riding is in order :)
