  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Modifications, are they worth it?

Ok, here's the deal. One thing I've noticed on CH is that very very few people leave their bikes stock for very long. Sure there are weaknesses in any factory design that come from compromises to cut costs, or comply with laws. I also get that performance or protection is always a motivation to make most mods. However I read over and over that the folks who fiddle the most also seem to have more than their fair share of problems as a result.

So I thought it might be interesting to get some feedback on those changes my fellow Husky lovers can't live without, as well as those they wish they had never done. So share the love or share the regret, but do please share. Just be cool and try to keep the potential arguments to a minimum.

The aftermarket water pump kit, rad protection and bark busters. Love em.

** forgot bout my jd jet kit, rear rotar gaurd And just upgraded to springs that match my weight.....lights comming soon

While the bikes are fantastic stock they can be better and upgrading is part of the fun for many. I find suspension tuning and protection is money well spent. EFI bikes all seem to benefit from a JD EFI tuner and lots of power and smoother running are the result. Steering dampers can make long rides much more fun and save you butt some too. tires are always an upgrade depending on where you ride. I have found I like a Seat Concepts seat on all my bikes as they are so comfortable and i do long rides. None of this stuff is necessary but all have added to the fun of the bike.

I'm just agreeing with the previous posters really.

Proper suspension setup for your weight / riding style / speed / terrain, etc. is possibly the best investment in time / money for any bike. Things like a different seat / bars / pegs can make the bike fit you better, or make it less fatiguing to ride.

Bikes with fuel injection that can be plated for road use will often be hamstrung by the manufacturer in order to pass emissions and noise regulations. Remapping the ecu or a plug in fix can improve pickup, solve stalling issues and liberate power.

Bikes from all manufacturers can have weak spots that just don't get fixed in a timely manner. Kudos to aftermarket manufacturers that provide solutions for us!

Bombproofing by fitting e.g. radiator braces / handguards / tougher engine covers and whatnot can save repair bills or even a long push back to the truck.

Sometimes it's just nice to personalise stuff and make the bike stand out from the crowd. :)

Im one of those guys who is a bit stingy with mods.. but my TXC511 has the JD tuner, an Uptite skid plate, TM Designworks chain guide (broke the stocker so its not really an accessory) and we just did the 2012 shock lowering trick.....that is all.

My TE250 has a Seat Concepts seat (really nice on dualsport rides) and the Kawi 12 port injector with JD tuner soon to be added for fine tuning and some Pivot Pegs as an experiment to see if I can keep my knees from going out.

Nice, keep them comin. I also figure this thread will help steer folks to the right places to get the best bolt on goodies. My wish list includes those rotor guards from Motosportz, a beefier skid plate, and maybe an FMF slip on and maybe the JD tuner to go with it. But I have not heard of the Seat Concepts seats yet. I don't notice how rock hard the seat on the 449 its until I'm on the street for a while. Its paying off already

I'm going make a radiator boil over reservoir ....
I have motorsportz disk guards, up-tite bash plate , desert tires, cyrca handguards, decatted muff, power up chip, Scotts dampener..... 2012 TE 511

I'm pretty new to riding, and I found myself slipping toward the rear of my motorcycle on steep hills repeatedly, so I put a piece of foam under the seat cover and even though it cost me quite a bit($11.00), I'm really happy with the change.

Tc449 forks, jd tuner, derestricted airbox, full fmf with mega bomb, tc rear mudguard, hand guards, reiger rear shock lowered, sprung for my weight, drz enduro timer, full graphics kit, g2 throttle, pillow grips, arc levers, gmx expansion tank, talon footpegs........fastest and best bike ive owned......sump guard, rad guards and xtrig triple clamps on the shopping list.

Softer seat foam seems to be a given.

Good skid plate.

Free flowing exhaust.

Bigger tank

Better tires for the type of riding you do.....desert, trees, whatever.

Some headlights were weak.

Computers are minimal.

Things I didn't do.

JD or Fuel Controll for ECU or 12 port injector...still a bit curious but

Steering Stabilizer

Bark Busters...not riding trees

Disc break protectors....no hard core rock stuff yet.

Dunlop Mx 51's and Power Commander/Autotune with fully uncorked exhaust made my bike really rip. As mentioned earlier, suspension mods or just proper setup also helps quite a bit..

I needed the JD tuner to solve stall issues and make run better. I wanted a taller gear to cruise the highway and open desert and bought the SuperSprox Stealth 46T rear. I'm pretty sure I could do without, my "louder-than-a-harley" FMF slip-on and other stuff I have, because the bike seems pretty good to me for dual sporting

Here's what I have done so far
7602 Racing radiator braces
Uptite skid plate
GPR V4 steering dampner
Highway Dirt Bike hand guards
ZipTy front axle nut
2 sets of tires

Haven't regretted any of my mods yet. In fact I love everything so far I would buy it all over again! The HDB Hamden guards are simply priceless I am pretty sure I have sold a few of them when my ridding buddies took a good look at them! Next up I'd love to start digging into the bikes two big weaknesses the EFIand the electric starting which who knows could be related.

I usually krrp them close to stock sans the environment crap and have heaviers rpings and shocks plus Bark busters full bash plate. Rest is ready to rock and roll.

Environmental legislation is a limitation on getting a bike streetworthy and homologated throughout the global marketplace, So it´s up to the end user to get the bike of his choice the way he wants it. That´s why the zorst and Efi, the p/u kit and the JD are all necessary parts of the deal.

I use my TE510 as a snowbike. It is lacking power in the snow. It has the PU kit with Arrow Exhaust with spark arrestor removed (uncorked?) & JD tuner. What can I do to add reliable HP? My riding buddy has a 2003 CRF 450 and that bike out performs the Husky. We both have the same snowbike kit. I would like to gain enough HP to ride in a higher gear. Not interested in a turbo, because I don't know enough about them, & they're too expesive for the HP gain. Does the TXC have more HP than the TE? The 510 dynoed 47hp at seal level before adding the JD Tuner. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The CRF450R is a much light er machine... For every 7lbs= 1 hp ... I wont ask if you weigh more than your buddy :busted:

No cheap upgrades. You can increase the air in and out of your engine. Air box mods, port & polish, fmf 4.1 rct silencer, iridium spark plug, powercommander 5/auto tune, SS oil filter / 5w50 / 0w40 oil.

Ty said they are on the list of items to be machined as well as a front disk guard that covers the entire disk.
