• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Mikuni Carb Intake Difference?

vintagecs

Husqvarna
AA Class
I need to rebuild some carbs for a 78 and 79 390 Husky and I have several carbs with the large intake bell. They are too long to fit well in the bikes, and I was wondering if I cut the bell down would it affect performance? The carbs look identical in every other way. Also, what models did the larger intake fit? All of my other 78-80 bikes are smaller, like the one on the right.

Yes the space between the carb & the air box/air filter makes a difference. On a 2 stroke RD400 I had, it had the 4 grand
carb flat spot, they all have stock. Put a spacer in between the back of the carb & filter & the flat spot magically when away.

I guesses like the swirl affect inside the cylinder, there's one from the air filter too. If the cylinder is pulling in fuel from the carb, it's also pull in air thru the filter, so the spacing make a difference.

The original 38mm Mikuni carbs I have here have the shorter inlet. The new one I bought a few years ago has the longer one.
It is possible that the aftermarket (non-Husky specific) are
generically longer.

mate had the same prob with his PE, new mikuni was substantially longer in the bell. he got it turned down in a lathe, works fine.

Absolutely, you can cut down the airbell to the same length as the short style. And yes the lathe works best and the easiest way to do it. I have personally done this many times. It won't effect performance as the rubber air box boot acts as part of the air intake track. I beleive the longer style carbs started being used on the 1983 models. Hope this helps!
