  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

I love this bike! Can't wait to get it onto a fire road or desert trail. But our annual Thanksgiving Camping trip is a few weeks away. This is the first of two TE's I will purchase, the other for my son. At 64 years young, my knees are saying "no" to hoop de chews, so I have to do more "sit down" riding. The bike is pretty much stock except for some oil change mods the previous owner made. I'm looking to buy a case of AGIP 10-60 oil. I want to take care of this puppy.DSCN0437.JPG

Congrats, it's a great bike, motor can be very strong, watch the vibrations tho, check nuts and bolts, and also, any wire that is rubbing against something could get bare. I notice the exhaust probe is still in place, look under the seat and see if the air cleaner cover is still in place, big black plastic thing.

OldHusky, All I can see is the foam rubber air cleaner and no big black plastic thing, unless you have to take the a/c off to see it.

It sounds like you have the totally freed up air cleaner arrangement. And you may or may not have the cat converter, honeycomb pipe of pipe inside the exhaust system, but you'll have to remove the muffler to see if that thing is in or out. I was just wondering since you still have the lambda probe installed in the header pipe, that kinda suggests the PowerUp process has not been done.

I found the AGIP 10-60 Full Synthetic on Ebay for $113 per case and $20 shipping which totals out to $11.08 per liter bottle. I saw this product for way more so I think I got a pretty good deal.

I have the same bike. Your bike looks well cared for. You are going to love that thing! You don't HAVE to run AGIP oil. Oil info can be searched out here on CH.

It you don't know, the 2008's needed the p/u kit purchased separately. They run pretty lean in stock form. I would correct that asap.

Take that grey/green valve off of the fuel tank vent hose, it can and will pressurise your tank like that. That can then bugger up the fuel pump flange and start leaking.

Keep an eye on the battery. Mine welded it's self to the seat pan, from the vibes. You can get a battery tray from the '09/'10 (inexpensive) models that helps some. I still use the stock '08 rubber strap and the later battery tray. I did squeeze my battery in to a cut out section of an old inner tube to protect it even more.

You already have good Up-Tite armor and 7602 drain plug(s). If you bugger up the stock chain guide (I sure did) the BRP one works well and looks good.

Take a razor knife and shave off the two spines/ridges on the back of the swing arm mud flap/shock protector. It will wear grooves in to the swing arm otherwise.

The fork sliders, make sure they are not rubbing on the forks during action. They will wear in to the forks. Loosening the 8mm bolts and realigning can help. A nice big zip-tie above the forks seals can give enough clearance to prevent the fork gouging.

Make sure the rear wheel adjuster bolts are coated with anti seize. I put anti-seize on the lower fork pinch bolts also.

You can take a grinder or hack saw to the auto-retract/bike fall down nub on the kick stand bolt that the spring flex's against.

If you do an oil change and then feel more vibes then normal, check the oil level. If you put to much oil in it will vibrate more then usual.

I have the same machine. Really like to ride it. Has small issues, but getting things worked out. just added the JD tuner and was able to get adjustments made to help with the flame out issue. I have never added the P/U kit or changed my muffler. Awesome power and alot of fun. I know you will love it.

I have an 08 TE510 and I ab-so-loot-ly love it. It's hands-down the most fun I've ever had on a motorcycle. It had some warts when I got it (tuning mostly), but some tweaking and it's perfect. The JD tuner will make tuning the FI a snap. Worth every penny.

BTW, put the Pivot-pegs on it. I have tired old legs too and this was one of the best mods I've done. Comfortable.....

Get rid of the lamba sensor and the standard heavy can , it will tranform the bike, load of low down power,

Thanks for all the advise guys. I did find out it's no desert machine. Going over hoops, the front end wants to dive into every hole and sand washes are a wash because the front end is way too heavy. I'm looking forward to fire roads and single track trails without hoops. After riding the machine for a hour, it was nice getting back on my old trusty 79 390 CR. Like putting on a old pair of slippers.

You may need to dial in the suspension. I find that I can handle way more whoops than I use to to on my ATK. Sand washes are no big deal for me and my son who rides a TE 250 and is 18 yrs old. He is out there tearing it up where ever we go!
