  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Intake boot separation

Does this happen a lot? Or is there an aftermarket one that will last longer than one you can get from a dealer?

I replaced mine back before summer because it was coming apart and I could see it quite easily. Yesterday I was checking stuff over before the weekend and needed to get the carb off to check and clean it. Had some trash in it on my last ride. When I pulled it out(carefully) the rubber separated from the aluminum completely. I can push it back on and it seems ok, but I don't want to take a chance. Planning on doing a MSXC race this Sunday and don't want to seize the motor because of an air leak, or just have it run like shit. I thought about using some JB Weld in the rubber to seal it back on the aluminum, but I'm kinda hesitant to do that.

I ordered another one from Hall's, but I was kinda surprised it fell apart so easily. I don't want to keep replacing these after every 5-6 rides. It's not going to get to me until probably Monday or Tuesday, so I'm just going to use my old XR250 instead. I really wanted to ride the TC though as it's been running great lately.

Do you have any pics? Is your boot like mine, below? I used some hi temp RTV silicone on mine and I wasn't too worried about running it like that. I put a new one on but saved the old one as a spare.

Basically yes. Only, the rubber around the bolt areas didn't tear like yours. It was a clean separation of the aluminum from the rubber completely.

I'm just going to use my XR for the race, new one will get here Monday or Tuesday. Just wished there was a better made intake for these that didn't fall apart so easily. I'll try rtv on the one I have since all but the connection to the aluminum is fine. See if it holds well enough as a spare.

I replaced my intake boot this last spring... http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/09...d-clutch-drag-issues.27630/page-3#post-300585
I just looked at mine and it's cracked again. Bigger too. I'll get a pic today. I'm tearing into the motor...

I wouldn't use JB. I think something more flexible (Hi Temp RTV or Permatex #2) would be the solution. Good luck.
The black permatex gasket maker has held mine together perfectly for 2.5 years. It is probably a superior material to the stock rubber as it has better flexibility/elasticity, better heat and chemical resistance resistance.

I try to avoid it when I can. But it's getting harder to find non-ethanol without buying straight race gas around here.

Yeah, I thought about that the next day. I'm going to try the black permatex on the old one since there aren't any cracks in the rubber. Hopefully it'll hold up well enough to get me held over to the next ride. Going to put the new on and get ready for this weekend. Riding in Alabama at the 7 Springs Lodge Saturday and Sunday. Can't wait.

The race today on the XR was kinda hellish. Forgot how much that thing beats me to death compared to the Husky. Of course, the TC's suspension has been built specifically for me, so that helps. I kept forgetting to use the clutch today though...good thing the XR is kinda like a tractor. I'm afraid Rekluse is spoiling me.
