  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

In Baja, Metal in oil, Need help identifying...Photos

I'm a dummy so please enlighten me. George, this is a seal ring from an OEM Husky main bearing? .... Guessing the bearing comes "open" on one side and a seal on other side? .... And the seal is the one you asked Blake to look for behind his flywheel?

If I ever see chunks like those in my '07 TE450 I'll understand what's going on... be relieved...to some extent... and will just have to open up the stator side and clear out all the "residuals"...true?

I have been following your rebuild from the beginning, (from your 300mi oil change) it saddens me to log on to see that you still have engine problems after all the effort fixing it.. best of luck in baja!

To answer and explain what is happening and going on is basically this. From my reasearch and talking to many,many bearing engineeres and bearing suppliers and bearing manufactures is that over 80% of all the bearings are made in China some are maybe ok for particular applications. But!
Where the biggest problem comes from is that the good bearing companies are being knocked off by Counterfit bearings made in China they are so good even they have a hard time identifing these bearings as the boxes and lazer etchings are almost perfect making them hard to identify as not being the real thing.
Having stated this think of it like this when was the last time in a store you paid for your goods and gave them a $100 bill first thing the cashier does is to hold it up to the light then puts a mark on it with a special pin, it's a tough world we live in today.
Having been using this particular brand of bearing over the last 10 years with excellent results looks as the last batch of bearings might have been counterfit they are on their way to the mfg to get analized.
Now the good part as a result of this. A series of bearings are being developed and will be made here in the USA for your Huskys by an aero space bearing mfg'r. More on this later.

George, not really sure how I feel about this. I mean I can understand it if these guys rebuilt them and got a bearing from the local bearing shop and had these issues. I dunno about Blake but that's certainly not the case with Clayton, he bought an 08 husky brand new. If it turns out that Husky got duped by their wholesaler, I think that somebody ought to be ponying up some $$ to the end user.

I'm doubly afraid if that's the case because all of us are sitting on a time bomb. My bike is EXACTLY the same as Clayton's, almost the same miles...

Somebody along the line knew these bearings were cheaper than they ought to be:cool:
 
Husky uses good bearings it's just that I don't like them as well as others I use. When I see failures I want to know why?
Also if my supplier can't keep a readily reliable available source on bearings or parts I go else where and look for something better or make it, or have it made major PIA and time consuming but I do.
Claytons motor as your's are totaly different from what has happened with these.

Remember back in the day when con rods had bushings and high pressure oil pumps and you never pulled the bottom end apart?
 
To update this thread, I picked up my motor from George last night. He sent my bearings to the mfg and they confirmed that they were counterfeit. He showed me the differences and they are so minuscule! I can't believe the amount of detail they put into these fake bearings. George said that what happened to me has only happened to one other motor he rebuilt at the same time, using the same counterfeit bearings. He got a new batch of bearings, rebuilt both motors around the same time, and both of us had the same failure around the same mileage.

I want to give George some serious credit as he stood behind his work and didn't charge me a dime to replace the bearings with the authentic ones. He is truly a stand up guy and ate the cost, likely at a loss. I will forever buy my parts and go to George for any Husky related problems in the future, and I suggest you all do too.

Oh and for those of you that know him and have been to his shop, he has finally decided to get a bit organized and is starting to file his paperwork in filing cabinets! :applause: I just hope that this doesn't confuse him and cause him to loose everything in those filing cabinets :thumbsup::doh:

Damn, have to buy bearings straight from the factory now.... What's the world coming to...?

I'm always amazed at how George handles all the phone calls he gets in a day and still does the work and talks to people who walk in. Never really see him lose it. Probably his Marine Corps training and experience.
