  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Husqy 450SMR - Choking issue

Husqvarna
First up, hey all! =] Hope I'm posting in the right spot.

I bought a second hand Husqvarna 450smr 2006 on Thursday and rode it home fine (20km). Was going for a second ride and had it choke and cut out at the lights half way home. Tried starting it again, turned over a couple times and kicked, kept going and happened again next set of lights, power switched off and engine died as soon as I pulled on the front brake and pull the clutch in to slow down for lights. Happened 2 more times, after which it wouldn't start again on ignition, would hear it trying to turn over but no go.

Seemed to still have enough petrol (I didn't check on purchase), had someone bring some down 4 or so litres of 92, topped it up, but didn't seem to help.
The battery is shitty, so trying to start it over and over seemed to drain it (it was getting slower and heavier in sound every time I tried).
Ended up having to push start it down a hill and ride it home staying on the revs all the way at the lights.

I suspected initially it was a battery related problem.
Previous owner had no issues with it apparently (who knows).

After Thursday when it died, had taken the battery out and charged it. I was able to check with a multimeter the voltage (couldn't check amperage) but it seemed to sit at 12.1v disconnected from the bike not running which isn't much to go off. Charged it anyways.

- Shoved it back in yesterday night, started fine first go.
Road around the block for about 15 min, seemed to go fine start stopping.

- Let it cool down for about 30min and started it again, started fine again.

- 2 hours later, took it on a longer ride, stalled it at a red light, tried starting again and it ticked over 3 times before kicking on again (not sure if bliping the throttle while starting is recommended but seems to help).

- Got to friends place, turned it off and tried starting again, kicked over a handful of times until kicking in again.

- 1 hour later, starts fine (cold again). Took it to petrol station, petrol was low (filled up 98 ) and took bike up and down the street, no issues, started first/second tick.

- 1 hour later, try again and ticks over but doesn't start. All in all, issues starting throughout the evening but didn't die while running again.

I'm guessing it's not a battery issue now, possible guesses are spark plug (explains not starting and turning off the first night) or accumulator.

Will try replace the spark plug tonight and cleaning carb, will keep posted. Also, considering just taking it in to a shop.

Couple of general questions if anyone is keen at having a stab:

- Anyone know if the headlight or console should switch on with the key? Neither run for me without the engine running (Regardless of kill switch too). The indicators although work even with the key out.

- When I put the clutch in to break, the headlight dims. The battery is shitty from what I understand, but don't know if this could mean anything else?

- The console also has no backlight (nice surprise for me when riding home at night). Any idea if it's possible to get one for either this model or upgrade the entire console? (Photo included)

- The bike also has two tabs/switches next to the fuel line that I'm not sure about. Ones obviously the cold start/choke (assuming its the black), the red one is hot start?

Also. The headlight is absolutely terrifyingly crap. I'm keen on upgrading it, anyone know what my options are? (I'm worried with the current battery that I'd kill it if I upgrade to anything more powerful though so yeah). (Photo included)

Appreciate any advice!

Also, anyone know where I can find a tech manual for it? Been looking for a pdf but can't seem to come across it. Thanks!

Welcome!

Actually the 'Common items on Husqvarna - tires / tubes / grips / etc' is probably not the best place, I'll move this over to "Italian 4st" where you should get more responses.
