• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

husqvarna engine number location?

Lee McGary

Husqvarna
B Class
Just bought a Husqvarna and I think its a 1980, but need to locate the engine number to see what model it is ,can't seem to locate it. Any information would be appreciated! First husky ever purchased and kind of unfamiliar with them.IMG_0516[1].JPG Here's a pic! It needs some restoration for sure! It's been sitting in a barn for years! Can't wait for nice weather and see what she's got under the hood.

looks to be a 250, time for a good bath, lol? barn fresh! does it turn over? engine number on that style is a riveted plate just above the cs sprocket. shocks are from a later 83/84 bike. looks to have a cr rear wheel or at least backing plate made to work with a wr link...steering head will have the frame number with model. something to watch on many years husky is that alot of years parts swap around. this is good and can be sometimes bad. you are in the right place though and we are ready to assist!
those are factory stock husky ohlins you have as well.

I've been rattling my brain for nothing! Where you said it would be is right where the sprocket cover was and when in its previous life the chain must have hit the cover and took a chunk out of the case, right where the tag would be. I still see where the rivet is still there. Thanks again! Lee

There's lots of helpful people on this site. Don't give up on that bike yet. The frame numbers can tell you some info.

i was going to add that yes the chain often wipes that area out. the case design is a little overkill there and just traps mud it seemed

The 250 OR is a screamer. The first three gears are WR (wide ratio) the last three gears are CR (close ratio) this keeps the rpms up in the meat of the power band. Don't underestimate this engine too it's pipey.

I think you have that backwards Bill. close ratio gear boxes were 4 and 5 speed. OR have 1,2,3, CR gears and 4,5,6 WR gears.

Cycle World special magazine on the '77 to '88 husqvarna bikes said it was 1st - 3rd wr and 4th - 6th gear cr? I can't find any other info about it. The OR tranny was used from '77 to '80.

The 70/80 cr were six speeds till '87 was the first 5 speed cr I think.

There were no Husqvarna 6 speeds in 1970 nor were there 5 speeds except in the minds of the engineers that were designing them. 1972 brought in the first 5 speed Husqvarnas The 1982 WRs and XCs and newer did not use the OR ratios as they used the WR transmissions. That OR ratio blend was likely discontinued when the OR became the XC. The first 6 speeds were the 1975 GP CR models (250 & 360)

Lee, the only way without the engine number is to split the cases and write down the numbers on the gears. The frame you have is the same frame used on the WR and OR.

Hello, could depend on market, ie country. All my huskys were 6 speed. For the cr the idea was to only use 5 gears, 2-6 or 1-5. You changed the counter shaft sprocket to get the right 5 ratio depending on the track. having said that my first husky was the 1972 125cc. 1975, 1977, 1979, all cr, then 1983 500xc, and 250wr. The or has the wr first three cogs, then cr. The xc and wr had the same gears at one point, but by 83, it seems to change again. wish kept those earlier bikes.
