  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

how tight (TE511 chain)

Husqvarna
What is the best way to check (measure) correct chain tightness on a 2012 te511. Manual says .2 inches. Not sure where this is measured from. Thanks for your help.

Measure at midpoint between sprockets. This chassis needs very little slack. I do about one finger width movement.

hi there, only thing i can add is too ensure you set the free play on the tightest part of the chain run. turn the back wheel and you will see how a worn chain assembly varies in tension! this is important due to the small amount of recomended freeplay.otherwise you could wind up setting the chain overall too tight causing excess wear. cheers regards nigel.

10-15mm

this is measured with the shock compressed (the swing arm horizontal) correct?
Did you guys take the shock out to measure or compress it with a ratchet-tie-down?

The slack should not change throughout the arc (except if compressed enough to hit the roller on the frame).

With the countershaft centered on the swingarm pivot the chain tension is constant.

Do you measure the slack when the bike is on a stand? on the ground with its weight on it, or sitting on it?

I usually do mine with it on the side stand, I wince a little adjusting it to 1/2" play, but it has been fine,
I re adjust when it gets over an inch,,,,

Hmm I just had a chain snap today, and I adjusted it as I have done a couple of times since my TE449 was new, 5mm is tight, I have been setting it up to 5mm that is so tight :( I want to know why it has snapped 17" road wheels with a smaller rear sprocket, I have sprayed the chain a few times it is not even a yr old road use only. Ideas???

I have fought the factory chain for 540 miles. It was getting loose, over and over again 75 miles at time.

Then I rode for a hour on the interstate and got to a place to offroad and it was SO tight....Like zero slack. Then I loosened it to .75" of slack (too much I know) now it has like 3" and is hitting the rollers/frame slider thing slapping, squeaking against the guides etc.

I think these bikes come with a GARBAGE chain.

You must have a bad chain. Mine has several thousand miles on it and still looks good. I have always adjusted
mine sitting on side stand, setting to 1/2" at tightest point. I do clean and lube after every ride in the dirt.
Several cafe members have more miles than I and report they are still good to go.

I too think the chain is garbage, I have to readjust after every ride. I measure mine on the side stand and make sure there is 5mm play in the centre. Bike feels alot better/taughter when the chain is tight.

Glad I am not the only one. I will be putting a overkill xring did on when my supermoto wheels arrive. I bet it never gets loose or tight. A real chain!

I must admit I not overly happy it snapped on me, was just about to over take a car on the road, getting on for 70 MPH, RK Racing Chain, 0-ring 520SO (have a smaller rear sprocket on the back even says for general street use. are there any more heavy duty chains around, 5MM is pretty tight especially if you get some tight spots, but a link casing snapped

I have used rk o ring 520 chains in the past on supermoto's with no issues. I wonder if you have a alignment issue with the back wheel? Or if you were running a loose chain and it was hitting/slapping something?

I have never had a chain snap.

I do make special care both marks on each side are the same, the chain was def no loose, I only tightened it a couple weeks previous, I returned the chain to the shop, they could make no comment on it, only done around 1500 miles on the road, no off road, and I have lubed it over that period of times a few times, I personally think it was too tight, or something got caught in it and stretched it, (did not feel anything at the time it snapped) or of course possible a weak link casing
