  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Hot start/cold start!

Bike is running better than ever. Flameouts nope. Power and response excellent.
Takes 3 or 4 trys, sometimes more to get it going, and if you shut it off hot, it has to cool/have
Time, then starts immediately. Just came from the garage, changed the temperature sensor, still
Same issue....I have the earth x battery, it turns it over great. Fuel pump, dirty screen, check valve
Somewhere? Seems as though it loses prime, fuel pump is activating...when its warmed up, and you shut
It off, it usually fires right now. Hate to be a parts changer, but guess thats where I am headed.
Thoughts?

Mine does a similar thing. Starts great cold. Starts great hot. But if I start it cold and run it for like 1 minute, then try to restart it, it has a very hard time.

Mine does the same, is it a possible lean condition (mine has Map II, all emissions gutted)? Fires up great on the first start of the day, but chokes, sputters and pulls down hard on a compression stroke any time after. I’ve always been able to get it started (with throttle) eventually, but it can be a struggle. I do not have an iridium plug, but it is a brand new factory spec plug. I have a power commander coming tomorrow for it, I’m hoping that helps.

My buddy has a BMW G450X and his pops off instantly everytime

i have the power commander and it does make it run better.
there is a feature to add fuel on start up, but i need to figure
out how to let it see temp. i am stumped, will begin serious
effort next week while on vacation.

Yeah, this seemed appealing to me too. You'd have to tap the temp sensor, and then tell the Power Commander what voltage = what temperature. Thats the hard part.

Did the PCV help at all with starting, even without the start-up feature active?

not really, once adjusted properly it eliminated the stalling, and just
ran stronger everywhere. I think it would help if you used that feature.
the pcv is a great tool, my problem will be fixed, just need some
time to troubleshoot and try some things. I think it is something
easy, because the bike just runs fantastic.

I made some progress on my 'warm' start problems. To recap the bike starts pretty good cold and always starts fine when its hot, but if its just 'warm' it cranks forever, resets the dash etc.
I adjusted my PCV Fuel map in the 500-1250 range and took out 17% fuel - I tried adding fuel and subtracting and determined that its too rich when it is having trouble starting. So far so good, starts right up cold and warm and hot, but need more testing to be sure its good in all situations.

The bike has BMW map 3 in race map 2 mode - I suspect with the stock exhaust it is a little too rich down low and thats why it has the trouble starting. It also seems like the ECU understands cold, and it understands hot (and leans the bike out to start) but maybe it doesn't have awareness of middle temps, and or it does not interpolate the fuel enrichment between the hot and cold values.

Anyways though, I suspect others might also have trouble starting because it is too rich so if you have a way to subtract fuel in the cranking RPMS, try that.

Thanks for the info Danny, my bike seems to act exactly as you describe. I will try it on mine and see if I can get an improvement as well. So you just did a “-17” setting for 500-1250 RPM at 0% throttle?

I have also noticed some fuel in my oil after a couple weeks of occasional “hard starts”. I’m assuming the cylinder is getting flooded with fuel.

I am thinking the opposite....the more fuel I add the easier my bike starts and stays running the first start.

Prior to adding additional fuel over map 3 I would either have to crack the throttle to get it running first go, or let it die and restart 3-4 times.
