Hi there, I recently purchased a 2000 SM 610S and I love it! It's easily the most fun bike I've ever owned in a long line of machines. Thing is the bike came in "as is" condition, and I've been slowly fixing the little problems I inherited from the previous owner (bolts snapped off in crankcase, clutch ruined with car grade 10w30, valve clearances, etc.)
My next project is to fix the cranky cold starting behaviour. Sometimes she starts right up, but most of the time I need to crank for about 30 seconds with delicate throttle and intermittent firing/missing before she actually holds idle, and I usually need a few miles of road warmup before she stops flooding out with too much throttle and/or backfiring.
The bike came without a choke; the post where I presume the choke actuator used to sit is bare on the clutch lever. I had just assumed that the cable broke at some point and the previous owner thought he'd just go without, but I uncovered something a little perplexing when I took off the tank to set the valve clearances... there's a Keihin FCR41 flatside under there... and there doesn't appear to be a choke on it.
Is this the stock carb for this model? I remember from my Suzuki Katana days that these Keihin FCR's are a pretty tasty piece of kit (maybe installed by the same owner that threw the Fast by Ferracci carbon pipe on there). I've done some searches on the forums here but have come up a bit short on resources concerning my model year, most 610 activity seems focused on the model that followed, and from what I've read I believe it came with a Dellorto carb or EFI in later years.
Carb issues aside, I'm not even convinced the FCR41 is the main issue, I've heard a lot of talk about the CDIs and igniter coils in this model being flaky. I read something on a thumpertalk thread where a fella talked about replacing the stock CDI with a "Husqvarna racing version", but he never gave a part number despite a few requests, and I can't find the thread right now. Does this ring any bells as a popular upgrade to anybody?
Sorry if all of this stuff has been covered a million times before, I honestly tried to do my due diligence before posting but came up a bit short for my model year.
Thanks in advance for any ideas on what might be going on, or ideas to fix it!
