• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Help with 1985 500XC

Husqvarna
C Class
I just acquired two vintage bikes from a friend. One is a KTM, the other is a Husqvarna.

Based on my limited internet research of the frame and engine numbers, it appears the bike is a 1985 500XC.

(FRAME = XP011xx ENGINE = 099201xx)

Is this a good bike? Limited research says it was a very fast/powerful bike.

Is this a good restoration canidate?

Can someone help me confirm exactly what I have?

Where is a good source for parts/manuals/documentation?

Can someone post pics?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

I have the same bike as you. Yes it it fast, it has a top speed of over 100 mph. It turns better than my older Huskys did too. I really do like the suspension for desert riding.Once the other bikes are wound out in top gear I still have 2 gears to go. I have not had a problem finding parts on E-Bay with the exception of good plastics. The only thing I don't like about the bike is the kickstarter being so high and on the left side. Once I get mine started, I keep it running and try not to stall it.

Those old Huskies bikes are total rubbish. Cut your losses, sell now. I'll give you $50 bucks for it. I'll be there tonight to pick up!!!

Here' a 400 XCE Enduro model, very similar to XC.

Your research is pretty spot on, way fast. Good rider and good canidate for Super Moto project maybe. Major parts, bearings/seals/ engine very available. Plastic body stuff and detial can be difficult to locate. Saddly, part out brings the most money usually.

Ya, that KTM is a GREAT bike, but not a collector. Would be a good "I ride it every weekend" bike, while that Hooska 500 is for special stuff and to wow the guys who think a 450 thumper is fast.

I need to get several parts... First off I need a kick start lever. Where can I get parts for a 1985 500XC?

Does anybody have a stash of parts?

I'm interested in restoring this bike, but it will be awhile before I have the time. Too many projects.

Is anyone here interested in a complete 1985 500XC project?

Sounds cool, I for one would love to atleast see a pic of it before it possibly disappears again. I also have an 85 500XC project bike.

Best of luck on either the restoration, or the sale, depending on which way you opt to go.

Oh, and the kickstart arm would be a fairly easy ebay score, if nobody in here sounds out with one real quick for ya.

airbox question

My 1985 500XC is missing the complete airbox assembly. I see one for an 1986 500MX on eBay. Is this the correct part for my bike? If not exactly correct, would this part work on my bike?

Hang on to that DG Silencer. DO NOT let anyone talk you out of it for even 2 kickers and an airbox!

99% sure it will work. lf it where from a 250 the airbox mainifold maybe smaller, i think you will be in great shape.

You may find when you fit the airbox that you run rich, if its been run without the airbox it would have to have been jetted up.

.......................you are also missing a hanger.

lf you look at where your airbox goes, towards the rear of the airbox there is a metal hanger about 3 inches long that hangs down from the frame under the seat. This is where the airbox mounts to.
You should have another mount about 6" to the rear of the bike, you need this to mount the back half of the side cover, you dont neeeed the side cover, but i dont think your filter would stay in for long without it. You may find at close inspection where the hanger was on the frame.
Also, the airfilter has a metal skeleton. Make sure the airbox has the metal airfilter holding spring ( looks like a long piece of wire that starts at the rear of the airbox goes to the front and back again.) lf you post the evilbay auction i can tell you if its complete.

Does someone have a parts list and/or a exploded parts diagram including part numbers for a 1985 500XC?

Does anyone have a parts interchange cross reference? I would like to know what years/models have interchangable parts with a 1985 500XC.

I have decided to sell the bike. Based on my current schedule, I will never have time for this project. I would like it to go to someone who will restore it or use it in a restoration of their bike. Based on the prices I have seen for parts I think I have an idea of what it's worth. Shoot me an offer if you are interested. I will post it in the for sale section in a few days.

What's so special about the DG silencer? Is the pipe stock or aftermarket?
