    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

HELP! Stripped out my metal screen oil filter cover/bolt on 2007 SMR510 - need advice & replacement

I was doing my first oil change on my 2007 SMR510 and accidentally stripped the female hex head on the smallest oil filter cover/bolt (the one for the smallest of the two metal screen filters that is both the bolt AND the cover). I used a round head hex Key on it and it ate it like it was made of puddy. It is basically completely stripped. I know. The situation just got out of control fast and once the initial damage was done the thing stripped out on the next two attempts.

So two questions:

1) Any suggestions on how to get it out now that it is stripped?

2) Where can I get a replacement?

I finished all of the other steps of the oil change including replacing the oil filter and cleaning off the other metal filter that has a cap and two bolts to hold it in place. How dangerous is it to keep riding the bike without cleaning that last metal screen?

Last time oil was changed was about 600 miles ago.
 
Cut a slot in it with a grinder or dremel then a large screw driver should do the trick.
Another way would be tap it around with a small chisel but that can get messy!
As for replacement, 7602 racing on this site do an absolutely brilliant kit that replaces all the oil change
Parts, then you just need a 14mm socket for drain and filter screen plugs. About $ 75 for the 3 part kit www.7602racing.com I think?
 
I clean that screen only every few rides now ... It's just too hard to remove and after the first 15 times I did remove it, there was never much to clean out of it and probably no way it can really clog up because the holes are so large...
 
Thanks for the Input - I was thinking the same thing after looking at a picture of the filter. I still want to find a replacement for the stripped out cap because if I ever do need to get in there I might end up destroying the current cap in the process of getting it out. If I get one now my bike's not down for the count until I get a new one.

To get it out I'm planning on cutting a slot in with a dremmel and using a really large screw driver. If that fails I don't know what i'm going to do.
 
I'm not going to try until the replacement arrives. What if I can't get it back in properly, or something goes wrong? I ride the bike to work so I have to make sure I am not risking the bike being out of commission first. I'll definitely update the tread when I give it a shot though. After looking at it again I'm pretty sure I'm going to cut a slot in it and use a massive screw driver. If that fails I will fall back on the chisel idea.
 
Make sure you cut the slot deep enough so the screwdriver has something to turn against, just don't damage the casing!!!
The 7602racing stuff is a massive improvement.
 
The other option that you have is drilling it and getting yourself a good set of "easy outs",or a screw extractor set, or a drill out screw out power extractor set. These are basically spiral fluted tempered metal tools that have the spirals going in the counter clockwise direction to grab the inside of the hole(that you drill in the bolt head) as you turn them to the left the flutes grab and spin the bolt out. They are very effective at removing stripped bolts and studs, as long as you keep the hole centered in the piece you are trying to remove and you have drilled the correct hole for the easy out you are using.The sets can be purchased at sears or anywhere that sells mechanics tools and they're not very expensive. They make sockets that do the same thing no drilling.... They just grab on to what's left over from rounding it off
