• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

HELP - 1986 Husqvarna 430 AE - NO SPARK

430auto

Husqvarna
A Class
I cannot figure out why I can't get spark on my 430 AE. Checked all the wires and there are no breaks. Grounds are good etc. What can I test? I read that the stator doesn't cause this and I don't have a spare coil to try out.

I have a brand new stator but need to buy the puller and holder to remove the one on the bike. I don't want to buy the tools if this wouldn't be the problem.

Any ideas???

Thanks in advance.

the stator cant cause a no spark condition?? not true
when you say grounds are good there is no paint where the coil mounts? also where the engine bolts up? engine needs good contact with the frame. hows the plug cap? these go bad alot. if you are going to ride the bike, it would be smart to snip it off and install a good ngk cap. the original motoplat caps sucked back when these bikes were new, and they certainly havent gotten better with age.
also, if you have 3 80s huskies, why not just buy a flywheel puller? then you can check your key and be able to service your bike. you dont need the holder, just hit the nut with an impact or put the bike it gear. remember it is lh thread. lefty loosey will snap the end of the crank off...these are easy to time but you have to have a dial indicator timing tool. essential tool if you want to service two strokes. there arent dealers around that want to touch these things and i wouldnt want to pay them anyway. with out the puller or dial indicator you have no idea where the timing is at..
so you have a brand new motoplat stator? thats pretty cool
the site jim pointed to has pretty good reviews for their work. lots of info for testing as well, but you will need a multimeter.

was just going to edit my post to include that! the kill, plug cap, or stator is the likely culprit. not saying its not the coil, but they dont seem to go bad often. the stators do tho.

Thanks guys. I pulled the cover off and it is an SEM ignition. I am just trying to locate a local vendor to get the right puller. I have a NOS SEM stator/flywheel to install and hope that will fix it. Brand new NGK cap end(still no spark) and I will try unhooking the kill switch in case its the issue.

I wouldn't take the bike to anyone to fix it. Had 1 shop use ATF in the trans on my 83 250 WR. 20 minutes into a ride, the gears jammed up and locked the gearbox. Pretty sure ATF isn't supposed to be used in there and all the bike shops have no idea what the old Husqvarnas are anyway, let alone an Automatic bike. Mechanics only know how to throw new parts at motor vehicles these days. Few people actually know how to "fix" anything. With parts for the pre Cagiva Huskies being hard to find you really want to take care of the best dirtbikes ever made.

ive run atf in my 84 wr 400 with absolutely no drama whatsoever... suspect something else happened there....

the difference is yours is a 6 speed with manual clutch
the auto takes a unique fluid
kinda like my Audi, just had the Quattro auto fluid changed, the only place to buy it is the Audi dealer

yep I read it as a manual 250 wr and I checked before firing my post but if it was an auto then atf could cause some issues ( I would have thought a funny smell and slipping clutches would be the issues)

I have one rule I follow on all my old Husky's... dump the sem and motosplat and run the mzb(on big bores)... an sem cost me one 2 day race only once and that was the last time!! 30 yr. old electronics are not good in my semiworthless opinion:D

The atf was in my wr 250 6 speed. It seemed to much of a coincidence that the gearbox jammed up (dogleg cogs) after they put in the atf but yeah it could have just been time for new gears anyway. The sem ignition lasted almost 30 years in my 86 430 ae before failing so its good in my mind. I have a brand new 1 to go in and finally got the right puller for the flywheel today.

What is this mzb ignition you speak of?

it may not be the best to run, but many have used atf with no ill effects. it will not cause sudden failure. altho i dont use it anymore, i have used it quite a bit in the past.
sem reliability is spotty, some last but many fail early. my 88 had one stock..lasted about two years then started the infamous "run in reverse" syndrome. have had a motoplat on it ever since. the motoplats fail as well but i trust them in general a bit more. i will say mine had the newer sem with the triangular cdi unit. the sem light output is fantastic tho..very powerful
