• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Have a chance to buy a 2008 TE610 in Brazil, but need advice

Husqvarna
Hi folks! I´m looking for a dual-purpose bike here in Brazil and my choices narrowed to the Yamaha XT 660R or a Husky TE610. The Yamaha, I think, is more road oriented then the Husky but as I´m a former enduro rider here (used to have WR 450, KTM 200, KTM 250, etc..) I think I´ll have more fun with the Husky in off road sections and bad Jeep roads, although I´ll need to use the bike also on the street, but only for comuting to work, about 5 to 10 miles a day.
For the same Year-model, the Husky costs 25% less then the Yamaha, and this is because the Husky importer here went out of businness and we have replacement parts problems, whereas Yamaha is solid here for more then 40 yrs, and the XT 660R is built in Brazil, and as it´s much more popular it´s resale is also better.
I´ve heard of some XT660R putting more than 100k miles before a major engine rebuild.
What can I expect from a TE610 before a rebuild? I´m aware of the cam chain problem.
The TE610 weighs around 100 lbs less than the Yamaha (306 vs 400) and have 5hp more.
I can find a 2008 TE610 here with the odo as low as 3.000 miles for 75% the price of 2008 XT660 averaging 15.000 miles.
Can I live with the TE610 in the streets on a daily basis? I´m 5´6 tall, would have to lower the bike?
I can import parts if needed from USA, only have to wait more.
Thanks in advance for the advices

Heya

I think the general advice on the engine is that it will last a fairly long time if you keep up the service intervals.
Some people have been unlucky and had engine failures with 5k Miles on, others go on without skipping a beat 30k +. Then it might be an idea to tear down and check tolerances on the rod and piston. Possibly do this when doing a cam chain ? I'm not a mechanic so not sure if the head comes off to do the chain.

I've got a 2009 SM610 and happily ride around the roads, I'll sit at 70 Mph on the dual carriageways and motorways.
The first thing to give out is my arse, I do need to invest in a better seat or some padded shorts.

If I were you grab the Husky and put the money you save on ordering up some spare parts and consumables (Oil, Filters) etc and have them to hand so you don't have to wait for shipping.

I would say the Husky would be the better bike, ONLY if you are confident in your parts supply. I have owned bikes that had no local dealer and made out very will with remotely ordered parts. I am not sure how well that works in Brazil, but you could talk to a large US dealer like Halls (so they know you) and set up an account. DHL wordwide express (and others) are extremely fast (I got china to canada in 4 days). Hope this helps. Cam.
