• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

How often are you guys changing your gearbox/clutch oil?

My buddy is changing his every 3 or so hours!! Is this not excessive?

I didn't find any reference in the owner's manual. I'm currently at 6.5hrs on my 18 te300

It depends a lot on how much the clutch is used. 3 hours of hard-enduro type riding with a ton of clutch slipping or of MX where some riders use the clutch out of every turn would absolutely make sense. For casual trail riding I don't think there is any harm in stretching it to 10 or even 20 hours. If the fluid doesn't get hot or contaminated by the clutch it'll last a really longtime. Using the clutch really aggressively can heat the oil up quickly and also shed some clutch material, contaminating the oil. This all assumes using oe spec oil. Some folks run other oils that may break down faster.

If I changed mine after every three hours of riding, it would be after each ride! I ride a lot of tight single track, so clutching is the norm. I check it to see if it's getting dark, or maybe looks like water has gotten into it ....otherwise, I will change it at least once a year if I haven't been doing that much riding. I use Honda Proline transmission oil.

All good answers...I've used spectro 80 wt light viscosity oil for twenty plus years .knock on wood. no clutch or transmission failures..I'm a fairly aggressive old A rider who loves the clutch...I change mine at four hours...five if I'm lazy or don't have time..(no spare bike) three hours if extreme (ie Enduro race). My thoughts are that oil and air filter are your cheap insurance to a long lasting engine..if riding aggressive my oil is dirty at five hours..but I'm sure my slow as heck ..c rider buddy Jim could go 20 hours and his oil would look just as good.. I've used all spectro oils for twenty five plus years..and had great luck..one failed bad from the factory gas gas transmission..one blown up 1993 husky wxe 250..(jetted wrong 25 degrees WOT on tar...my fault) I always have one or two spare air filters and air filter cages..I think I would abuse the clutch less with a 300 just due to the added torque (my bike is a 19 xc 250)..I'll be back on a husky or tm next year..your buddy is more then likely to never see a failure the way he is doing it...if he puts 100 hours on in a year at 10$ a quart..so app 333$ a year and at changing it every ten hours..that's a hundo...so 233$ a year for piece of mind and no worry of failure and I would assume the clutch components would last longer ..I'll stick to my 4 hrs.. a transmission failure would suck ..I'd probably drive 11 hrs one way to have it fixed and lose time and money...my slow buddy changes his once at beginning and once at mid season..however he probably rides twenty hours a year...

not racing 20hrs even if was racing its would still be around 8 hrs or until it does not shift as smooth you can tell when the oil lost its slickness

Some good opinions, I do ride a few enduros a year but usually trail riding with buddies. It is relatively cheap insurance so I'll change it sooner rather than later. Based on type of riding I'm doing at the time.

Thanks All!

I change my transmission oil every 5-6 hours. I use Bel Ray Thumper Gear Saver 80W-85. It looks good = red when it comes out from the engine, but in my opinion it is good to always have fresh oils. It does not cost a fortune to change oil this often anyway.
