I restored a 78 WR250 earlier this year. In the process I converted to 40MM forks. I used the aftermarket steering stop rubbers. But with the bike sitting a few months with the wheel turned to one side, the rubber stop has completely deformed. Does not seem the compound of the rubber was stiff enough. This will cause forks to hit tank on a tough turn. Even the one that is not deformed seems like it would not hold up in hit.
I also realized the fork conversion makes the steering stops slightly off angle such that the forks don't hit the rubber squarely, which could also be contributing to the rubber deforming.
I can move the tank back a bit and drill a new hole for the tank mount, but anyone else face this issue with the soft stoppers or fork conversion? Are there "better" stoppers or other solutions besides re-welding the tubes that hold the stoppers at a different angle (too late for that...)
