  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

First Ride with Rekluse impressions from a Novice point of view

Cannondales had them stock (option) and Christini offers them stock. Many off rode racers now using them as well. Many of my fast friends use them and don't tell anyone. Again, it is not a magic bullet but used right can for sure be an advantage to many. Some people like it so much they feel like they are cheating. I used them a lot then kinda moved away from installing them, no real reason. Really want one for my 511 now to make it as amazing in the tight as it is in the open.

Trick question ... If the engine is idling or dead, the tranny is already disengaged from the engine ... If the engine is above a specific RPM, the clutch lever will disengage the engine from the tranny.

True...

Sorry ... but this device was a little confusing to me also till my engine died on a steep, gnarly climb and the bike immediately rolled backwards as a side effect of the clutch being totally disengaged... Can this behavior be adjusted out of this device?

Kinda, not really, but Yes you could! but then you are loosing the benefit of it being an auto clutch.

EDIT: These a are very good devices ...Lots of people like them, but safety first ...Be ready for this behavior when riding ....

Correct, this is the only draw back I have found and most of what I ride is Yosemite/ Sierra national forests. LHRB fixes this issue rather well.

The trans and engine are still engaged when the engine is off or idling. You have to either pull the clutch or put the bike into neutral to mechanically disengage it. Have you tried pushing your bike with it still in first gear? It is still fully engage unless you pull the clutch lever.

On the hill climb part, sounds like I will continue to avoid hill climbs like I always have.

No its not in gear (not really anyhows), I can push my bike around in any gear with no clutch, it just barely grabs. If it is grabbing it not adjusted correctly.

Interesting.. My bike is adjusted incorrectly then ... Without any lever play, my bike can be pushed around in any gear when the engine is dead and will actually start in gear and will stay in one place when started ... If you blip the throttle at this moment, thinking the bike is in neural because it started and sat in one place, the bike takes off ... Another moment this is exciting, but depending on how many hands are on the bars and maybe what is directly in front of you, it may not be so pleasant ...

On the hill part, I'd say continue to practice like most of us do and continue try to learn how to ride your bike ...

Yep, but the bike (at least mine has been put in gear) and the bike can be pushed around ... You can feel the clutch or something dragging when you push the bike ...My friend though the clutch was dragging badly and in true neutral when he pushed it around... Nope, the bike was in gear and the auto-clutch was causing that behavior.

So what is the fix and what is the default behavior of this device?

These devices work well and will makes changes to the default behavior of your bike .. Its owner beware till you get used to these devices ...Myself, I would be more than disappointed if I purchased one and found all this out afterwards ...

I've always wondered what the long term effects are on the clutch, if any at all.. and other parts that interact with the Rekluse..

My bike with Rekluse does exactly the same thing Ray, very slight drag, much unlike the 449/511 drag we experience even in neutral for a lot of us. I cant even push the 449 with it in neutral without pulling the clutch. If I keep it I think its getting a EFM.

I can start in any gear, clutch out (Beta with Rekluse), big plus in my book, I cant start my 449 in any gear lower than 4th or be in neutral due to clutch drag inherent in the bike. Hit the throttle on the Rekluse and the clutch grabs and we are off having fun, let off the gas and get to idle and we are freewheeling just like the clutch is in. Set-up is to engage just slightly after giving it some gas, this sweet spot can be fine tuned to ones liking.

They offer very good tech support, I believe this may be the issue to check first for this situation.

Having a Rekluse doesn't always mean "autoclutch". They make traditional clutch parts as well.

someone around with rekluse in his TE449 OR 511 ????
Unfortunately they don't make a Rekluse for the 449/511. I enquired with them and it's not something they're working on either. Guess it makes sense given it's end-of-life now, but still disappointing. I believe your only option for an auto-clutch for the 449/511 is to get your clutch assembly modified by EFM who do custom auto-clutches.
