  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

First Ride on my - - 2011 TE449

I posted this review on another site but thought it fit here better.....

My biased (biased cause i already paid for it!) review:
Took my new 2011 TE449 out to break in the engine some today. My local mountains are windy with lots of room to accelerate softly and use engine breaking to slow down. I rode from 2000 to an elevation of about 7000 feet. I did all asphalt today as my arm is healing and cannot take off-road abuse just yet. To me that’s fine as it gives me some time to get to feel how this TE will behave on the pavement and to break in the engine. I left my house with 11 miles on the odo and returned with 186, for those not quick at math that’s a total of 175 miles traveled today.

Engine (4.5 / 5)
The engine is bone stock and performed very well. I got 50 miles to the gallon and as stated in the manual the fuel light (albeit microscopic!) came on with about 1/2 gallon remaining. Coming off of a XR400R and then a DRz400s I could always snap the throttle and pick up the front wheel. The front wheel never felt like it wanted to lift with the TE. This may be due to the longer swing-arm on the TE but It just felt that the engine needed a little more umph. This may change when I put the "race mode" plug thing in, but I haven't yet and as tested, needs more punch. The engine is smooth and pulls from the bottom through mid range very consistently with very little vibration. A little more vibs the faster it spins, but its a single, what do you want, a 30 pound counter balance? I never wrang it out as I am still breaking in the engine (and not by the floggin method!)

Transmission: (4.5 / 5)
When I went for a few short runs to get to 11 miles before today's ride I noticed I could not get the trans in to neutral with the engine running. Engine off it would 1/2 click above 1st as expected but as today progressed and break in did its magic, neutral became easier to find. As a matter of fact the trans shifted better and better as the day went on. There were no false neutrals and the trans dropped right into any gear I poked at, almost forecasting my next move. I do have some concern about how close the transmission ratio is as I kept trying to shift one more time only to find I was already in 6th gear. This little TE will have a hard time on any So Cal freeway as it seemed to work harder then I wanted to push on a new engine to do 60-65. I will ride it in dirt before changing anything but will be paying close attention!

Chassis: (5/5)
Aawww what can I say… by the end of the day I was coming down the local mountain road called Sand Canyon and I think I could have taken on an army of sport bikes shodding their pilot powers or battle axes…it wouldn’t have mattered because I was in a groove and the bike was integrated into me!!! The TE has a firm feel with no unexpected or unwanted chassis shakes or shimmers!! The bike from the start instills confidence. As is dirt bike fashion, the seat is hard and starts to hurt depending on how fat your ass is. Mine is medium fat so it started hurting mid day. As some internet reviews mentioned the pipes will burn your riding pants, they did mine as well and left a couple of black smudges on my new pipe, so a P3 guard is high on the list.

Noteworthy:
Display: (3.5/5)
Can't see it because the brake/throttle/speedo cables block my view and the turn signal/high beam/low fuel lights are tiny and hidden by the front plastic as well. The small mode button is nearly impossible to press with gloves on.

Storage: (1/5)
No, none, nada…I was scared my registration wasn’t going to fit taped to the underside of the seat (it barely made it)! Then wondered where to put my proof of insurance….

Headlight: (3.5/5)
My ride home ended up being at night. The headlight gave good light and threw a descent pattern. There is room for improvement but since I do very little night dirt riding I see no reason for upgrading.

Tires:
The factory installed Metzeler karoo tires performed just fine, now remember this was asphalt only!! I will report when I get this to the dirt!!

Summary:
Regardless of the bias remark because of finances invested, I would purchase this bike again tomorrow. It is tight, smooth and predictable. It builds immediate confidence and can only get better as it gets tuned a bit, dialed in and completes its break in process!!!

Might want to bring it over to cafehusky also.
Several things hit me as right on with my 449. I think you will like the map II when you get around to doing it.
Transmission - exactly! Coming off a 450 EXC I am trying to get used to going through 4 gears to get up to 35 LOL. Keep searching for 6th but I'm already in it!
Display - I had the same observation (or lack there of) with the cables being smack dab in the way of the display. Still looking at fixing that, after my bar risers get here.
Storage - Uh huh. I taped my papers under the seat as well.
Headlight - there is talk either here or on cafe husky about putting higher wattage bulbs in, and which one to buy at the auto parts store. Don't know where I saw that, but I'll keep a lookout for it again if we all decide the stock is not good enough.
Tires - Nice on the road, ehhh on the dirt, at least out here in the desert. Gillies who frequents here just put on a pair of Dunlop MX71's and as I type he is out testing them. I'm sure he will contribute his opinion. I think my Karoos are going to go, as I don't intend to ride this bike on the road more than a trip to lunch or similar.

Let us know when you get some dirt time in!

One thing I forget to mention is the PITA auto kick stand. If i move the bike around my garage i am inevitably on the wrong side of the bike...so Since I noticed the bolt came loose after my first ride I am now going to throw it in the lathe and cut the pin off the end of the bolt and lock-tite it back together... Check all other bolts for looseness!

… by the end of the day I was coming down the local mountain road called Sand Canyon

Do you mean "Sand Canyon" as in Santa Clarita Sand Canyon? My fav' ride/road as a kid was Sand Canyon/Little Tahunga. I lived in the area (Mint Canyon Rd) in the 70s and Sand Cn. Little Tahunga road was crazy fun.

quick checks!!Check the rear spokes every ride . grease the bearing at the end of the shock every other ride. watch for the gear stick getting loose.

Welcome to CafeHusky;)

The OEM/EPA tuning will most likely be a little underwhelming compared to how it was intended to be tuned for Stock/performance tuning. Then there's furthering it from there with tuners and pipes and such... just like anything else.

I heard the Karroo's are trash- but after 200 miles of street I would not expect much from any tire offroad.

Nice review- welcome to the mix- I personally haven't even seen a 449/511 in person yet, still liking my 09TE450 though, I am sure the 449/511 is a great package:thumbsup:

Yeah, the karoos in the dirt are ok....but not exactly tractor tires. Thought that dropping the pressure to 10-12 like a pure dirt bike helped a little, but not that much. They are surprisingly good on the street thought for what its worth. Oh, and the little reflector on the bottom of the lic. plate frame will eject itself after the first good rocky roost hits it. Locktite everything before you off road, my bike lost 2 screws on the first short off road sortie! Gladly the lost reflector (the little piece that was left) donated it's bolt to keep the plate frame attached to the fender.

My bolt also donated itself to the same cause!!!

I got a TE 250 2010 and when I goose it I can get the front wheel up pretty easily in 1st and 2nd (has to be on pavement tho as dirt there's no grip with factory tires). But that's after the power up stuff. I'd highly recommend that, makes quite a difference. I also got the JD Jetting tool (hooks up to fuel injection system and you can richen or lean it out on the fly...) The real power comes in after 6000 rpms :)
