  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

First thing I changed was the handlebar. The stock bar is too straight for me for offroad work so I installed a Trail Tech X Bar which is about the same as a Pro Taper Doug Henry Bend. I also installed a Motosportz damper- my favorite. What a clean install. Thanks Kelly! The under mount raises the bar about 15mm. If this pushes me back too far on the bike I will source a bar with less height. More to come shortly as I dig in to the suspension.....004.JPG007.JPG

Nice, and your welcome / thank you. :D Looks like it showed up quickly. That looks really good on there and should calm that bike down and make it a much more relaxing ride.

- Make sure the pin is not to high and floats a little as you don't want it pushing up on the arm. I like to run them about flush with the top of the arm.

- Looks like you might need to slide the damper slightly rearward, you want the pin centered in the slot and it should not walk around in the slot when you turn the bars. The damper pivot point needs to be in line with the stem center.

- Get some fork bleeders for that.

The mega bombs that I had in the past actually were quieter than the stock . A bit deeper and more mellow.

I took great care to line the pivots up when I installed it. I will check it again however.

Bleeders are on

Well, after installing four sets of handlebars I ended up using the stockers, which I cut down 5/8" on each side. They seemed to have the best feel considering the 15mm I gained with the sub-mount damper. All is good now! 004.JPG009.JPG010.JPG

Did a 60 mile ride yesterday and the damper worked AWESOME!! I can't imagine not having a damper on a KTM/ Husky in our terrain........

An update to this project:

Have gone through three renditions of the Race Tech open chamber mod with Gold Valves at base and mid. NOT a good setup- for me. I was going to continue down this path but I don't think this is the route to go with this fork. Everyone else who has ridden it agrees. So...... I borrowed a local tuner's fork (Suspension By Design) and it worked very well for me. It retains the stock pistons and uses an asymmetrical setup at the midvalve. I believe it is a modified version of the MX-Tech setup. The rebound control was phenomenal, and front end control and traction were awesome. The faster I went, and the harder I pushed it, the better it got. I can live with this. I also was able to turn my stabilizer completely off! It was like a completely different bike and felt 30 pounds lighter. The shock is at his place as well- it is a wallowy pile of......

I was going to work with the gearing next, as second and third are spaced too far apart for my needs, but I think I will leave the gearing and search for more power instead. That will have the effect of tightening up the gearing. Maybe a 270 kit.... or just a pipe. I am leery of the big bore kits as I have never been satisfied with them on other bikes.

A comment regarding the in-mold graphics: I really don't care for them. They sound like a good idea in theory, but in reality they lose their looks rather quickly. Good old vinyl graphics keep their looks longer for sure.

Stay tuned for more!!
