• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

DS intentions... TE610 the right weapon of choice???

Looking to take advantage of 8 to 10 Dual Sport weekend rides (+ plenty of solo rides) in NJ, PA, NY, MA, VT, MD, and VA, all to include riding TO these events and carrying all my gear for camping, etc (it's all part of the adventure to me...). Other than a bit of dirt-bike riding in my teens (25 years ago!), I'll be a "noob" to dirt/woods/trail/mountain riding, but I am a very solid street rider (& YES, I know it's VERY different!), a pretty good athlete (Div I college soccer), stayed in good shape, hike, camp, windsurf, ski (hard, in the bumps & woods...), and I tend to have pretty good instincts --- in short, I plan to ride aggressively (NOT crazy, but most certainly aggressively, off-road).

So, is the TE610 a good/the best weapon of choice??? And yes, I would shore up the rear fender sub-frame before loading up my camping gear, etc...

ALSO, and VERY importantly, looking to ride whatever bike I end up buying out to and back from a 4 week+ riding & camping adventure in CO & UT --- up in the mountains and down in the canyons...

Again, TE610 the right way to go??? Looking at an '08 that I may act on, with the right kind of feedback from you guys... (WAS looking at a TE510, but decided the whole CO/UT venture would be asking too much of it --- am I right on that too???)

Thanks guys! I am brand new here on CafeHusky, but I love it already.

BTW, if you come through CT I'll show you some good riding and place to wrench on your bike if needed.

Thanks for the input "1lunger"! And yes, I'm sure that I'll be coming through CT. I'm planning on riding to-and-in the Berkshire Adventure Ride (aka "The Vince is Not Dead Yet" Ride) in MA, to the top of Hunter Mountain ski resort at the Color in the Catskills in NY, different DS rides thru Max BMW in NY, MA, VT and I'd love to get introduced to some good CT riding too. I'll let you know when I pull the trigger and thanks again.

-The TEs are a fairly unique compromise of light weight for off-road and power/gearing for on road.
-They're awesome dual sports, most wouldn't think of them as cross country bikes though.
-Make sure you've had it long enough to have it sorted before you attempt a cross country trip.
-Get a windshield.
-Get a good seat.
-For road work Metzler Sahara 3 tires would be a good choice.

As much as I like my TE, I don't know if I'd ride it across the country or not. You certainly could with the right setup but it might not feel like fun. I may ride up to Alaska/Prudhoe Bay next year but will trailer it to Montana to save some wear/tear. I did just trailer to CO/UT last month, I don't know a bike I'd rather have been on (there's a thread here w/ my pics).

Might depend on what actual % of difficult dirt you are doing?

Personally I would rather have the bike more capable in the dirt than street, cause bikes can be a handful in awkward situations.

Also, the 2006/7 610s might also be something to think about, if you can find them.

If you plan to do a good bit of dirt and some single track the 610 is the mount. If you plan on lots of street and some 2 track and gravel roads i would pick the TR650. Smoother, more range, better setup for long road miles.
