• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

downshifting issues

been experiencing this for a few months now and it's gradually got worse into the bike being almost unrideable this morning. shifting up is fine, never a problem. but when shifting down i'll knock it down a gear, let the clutch out, then pull clutch in again to kick it down another gear but there'll be nothing there. like the gear pedal will move all the way down without shifting the gear. It's not doing it in any particular gear and i've tried adjusting the clutch but to no avail. anyone got any ideas? i'm stuck and fearing the worst about my gearbox... :(

Shift lever spring may be weak, not pushing the lever all the way back to center, so the ratchet isn't grabbing the next pawl. Fairly easy check and fix if that's it, just pull the right cover and play with the shifter.

Have you added a skid plate or dropped the bike on the left side recently?

hey mate. thanks for your reply. just had a fiddle with it and sounds like that's exactly what it is. when the lever goes down it isn't returning fully to the mid point. do you need to remove the clutch to get to the shift lever spring?

no skid plate or drops!

Shouldn't have to, just pull the cover, and with the lever off, slide the shifter shaft right out. The spring is located on the shaft. You'll at least be able to tell if it's the spring or if it's something else in the mechanism binding up.

finally got back from my euro road trip today (will create post with link to blog if anyone's interested?) and opened up the husky. either i'm being a dumb arse or the clutch needs to come out to be able to release the gear pedal spring. there's a big cog stopping it from sliding out and the clutch is sitting on top of it. or is there a knack i'm missing? i've got the part ready and waiting to fit. so annoying...

You could be right, if there isn't a clearance hole in the gear to allow the shaft to slip through. That kinda sucks, but gotta do what you gotta do :excuseme:
Sorry to mislead you on that...

no worries fella. your advice was spot on otherwise. it's def the spring that's the problem. i can at least see the way it has warped. gonna get a mechanic to come out and fix it if i can. removing clutches is beyond me if i'm honest. think you need special tools etc?

Some sockets, wrenches, an impact gun, a good sense of organization and a whole lotta finesse...

got the little lady sorted. a mobile mechanic that was recommended came over and popped the clutch out, simple as pie! fitted the new part and she's right as rain again. interesting thing was i was looking at the warped spring and squeezing it between my fingers and it snapped clean through. guess that was a lucky escape! cost me £70 for call-out charge and 1 hour labour. will be using this fellow again when the cam chain goes.
