  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Difference between wr pipe and cr pipe ?

I have 2 pipes for my 79 wr and they look the same from the outside, and they may be the same but I was wondering how you determine what pipe you have. My bike is really quiet and just don't have the ting ting sound that the cr's do. I would like to try a cr pipe and see if I like it more and if and when I ever race in a vintage enduro , I could install the wr pipe and silencer with the baffle cone to be legal.
when you tap on the pipe it has more of a thud sound . So if I have 2 wr pipes one will be for sale and I will be looking for a cr pipe that fits a 250.

Pipe should be designed to deliver the sound wave back to the engine at the optimum rev range for the porting/timing etc would imagine the position of the cone distance from the exhaust port would be closer on the cr for more top end.would be interseting to see how much the exhaust efffects the power range.

I think the silencer will make much more difference than the expansion chamber. Most times the expansion chamber is slightly different, but its very minimal, where the WR silencers have always been more restrictive (and heavy) than the CRs.

I just checked tech ref and parts on this site and the cr pipe is 15 14 222 01 and the wr is 15 14 241 01
So maybe there is some difference between them?
Could there be a difference in the wall thickness?

the thing i have noticed between the cr and wr pipes is usually the diverging cone. the cr has a shorter, fatter one and the wr having a longer thinner one..that was something i remembered on my 79wr. the wr pipe is double wall for sound..

I remember reading that somewhere now that you say it. Well, I will try the silencer first and then I will decide to look for a pipe.

Yes that is correct. The WR pipes had a double wall to help reduce noise, that is one of the reasons they are heavier than the CR pipe.

The CR and WR pipes, of almost any year, are definitely different, but in my experience the difference in actual performance is minimal. You definitely want to change the silencer first, that will be the biggest chunk of performance gain.
