  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Difference between an '81 430 XC and CR

Bengt Husky

AA Class
Sorry if this question has been raised before...

I'm trying to find out the big differences between the XC and CR versions of the '81 and '82 430 Huskies. other than the obvious....rear loop on the frame and the wider ration gear box of the XC are there any other obvious differences ? I want a CR but keep being offered XC's and I just want to know how different they are and can you make an XC into a CR ?

Do you need help finding the parts sheets? I am not a super expert on that exact year but generally
the cr has an internal rotor ignition and no lighting coil
the cr has what I consider a full floater rear brake perhaps that is a suzuki term.
the xc has a larger gasoline tank and longer fork stops
not all cr and xc have different transmissions you would have to study the parts sheets to be sure If the transmissions are different the primary reduction ratio may well be different also.
I can't say about the cylinder as delivered back then (but they may well have been carved on in the last 30 years) but probably the exhaust pipe and silencer were different My 83 xc had the spark arrestor silencer.
I am pretty sure the axc had a conical rear hub but I don't think you intended on asking about that one. another thing to keep your eves open for.

Hope that helps to some degree. The search function might find a little more.

I have one of both, 82's. XC frame has rear frame hoop as you well know, it also has an extra tube under the engine for protection. Like Fran said the engine difference is ignition, close ratio trans (CR) and pipe is different. Suspension is same other than the above mentioned rear brake. I actually have converted my CR's to a swingarm mounted brake stay when I went to the 18" rear wheel. XC's have a wider rear brake shoe also. I never noticed any difference in brake chatter. 81-82 tank size is the same, 83 XC's had larger tank than CR's. XC's gearbox, wide ratio, has lower first through third ratios than the CR, then third through sixth is same as CR, close ratio. Good 430-500 CR trans. parts are getting hard to find. I wouldnt pass on a XC, can't go wrong with a 430!
